Comments: | As 縹緻 is not a variant of 器量, I don't think we can make it sK unless we include an "also written as 縹緻" note on sense 1. I'm not sure if that's a better approach (considering the form's rarity). |

Comments: | Might be worth splitting しょう and あかし. (not jmdict's fault, but there's quite a mess in Japanese between あかしする あかす しょうする しょうす あかし しょう). (note: I read all the previous comments on this) I have a wrinkle for you. I think [3] is also [n], and still distinct from [1] (just as "witness" has these senses in English). And, in that context, it's not only the reading that may prefer あかし, but the kanji form itself as 証し (with the し). All modern refs use this form. Also note, sankoku gives *only* 証し. So while 証 might have some historical weight as あかし, it doesn't appear to be the preferred form today, and looking at Christian websites, し seems to appear explicitly. (though it is hard to search for usage without it). I am grateful that [3] is here, even though the kokugos don't call it out. I hope I don't inadvertently push you to remove it. It is specifically relevant to the context I just encountered it. A mystical villain appears who goes by the name "sloth"(怠惰), identifies himself as one of 6 disciples of a powerful witch (the central mysterious antagonist of the series) structured around the 7 deadly sins, carries a black Bible-like book he calls his 福音(gospel), speaks constantly of the witch's love, and describes the book using 証し(subtitled with this orthography). The relevance to Christianity is unmistakable. If we didn't have [3] here, I'd miss the weight of the vocabulary choice entirely. As he repeats 証し 証し 証し in Japanese, the English translation is "proof". Later he describes the book as 寵愛の証し, which is subbed "proof of love". This may overlap adequately with [1]. This is one of the later senses of "witness" in the dictionary: openly profess one's religious faith. "one of the purposes of his coming was to nerve the disciples to witness to Jesus" I think there may also be some nuance differences that cannot be identified with しょう and おかし stuck together in [1]. (I'm not sure if "proof of love" especially needs to be called out, but there do seem to be reasons for preferring one term over the other). |

Then I saw 類いない was a relatively uncommon term, and that this was a more common synonym. There are contexts where all these glosses apply, but it seems like "unparalleled; incomparable; unmatched" should lead, given both the literal nuance, and the frequency in reverso. Before that, 類 only had one reading on the list (音: るい). This chiebukoro user saw 類い written in a recently-published novel written by a famous author. Then after using 類い at work, they were told by a work colleague that 類い is incorrect because it's written as 類 in kojien. The impression that I get is that 類 is the most commonly used form, but the government is trying to promote 類い in official writing due to the ambiguity with るい. It seems this style hasn't yet entirely caught on, however. |

Refs: | Maybe I shouldn't copy/paste the whole explanation, but who knows which site will outlive which, and it's a good set of comments.
|
Comments: | I can't mark kanji forms [rK] on a [uk] entry, but I'm pretty sure [oK] still applies. If the random hinative reference is to be believed, this is a word with an official orthography, and it's hiragana. 憤る in a newspaper will *always* be いきどおる. As some confirmation, sankoku does not give kanji for this term at all (and it contains some crazy kanji, like 憤懣). Everything I've looked at suggests 憤る will be taken as いきどおる in modern Japanese, and even in old texts, 憤る will only be read as むずかる when discussing babies and small children specifically. (sankoku says "小さい子供などが"...) Right now 憤る appears to have an ambiguous reading(which is exactly why the hinative question was posed). It would appear that it's not really that ambiguous, and we can easily clarify this for anyone who sees both 憤る entries here. More stats on backref (I started there first before finding the hinative details). I recommend merging. We don't *usually* have standalone entries for prescriptive "mistakes", and the kokugos identify the backref as a common misunderstanding/error, which might be better as [sK] or [io] to here. |

Comments: | Took the two most common reverso glosses that were also in eijiro. This term is not limited to computing. Either gloss would be fine in computing. Image searches are about evaluating *housing* performance. Didn't look into it further. No need for "benchmark" as a gloss. The current Japanese word for computer benchmark is "ベンチマーク". No major harm translating a computer benchmarking situation as "performance evaluation", even if this was the only translation in texts from the 90s. |

Comments: | 類いない over 類ない in deference the the official movement to change the orthography. I did read the whole conversation on たぐい, Quite interesting. I xreffed 比類ない without の due to structural similarity, but my intention is that it be aligned with 比類のない, which I have currently edited as: unparalleled; unparallelled; incomparable; unmatched; unrivaled; unrivalled; peerless; unique; unprecedented Do we think the meaning here is distinct from the xref? (it does not seem so to me). Do we try to give more dated/formal glosses for more formal/dated terms (like preferring "matchless" and "peerless" over "unparalleled" and "unmatched")? Maybe that's better? I don't know which users will pay attention, but the fact that 類ない and 類のない apparently have different readings on 類 is quite shocking. (the latter commonly るい, hence the high ngrams). That xref is more of a warning than anything else. I made the reading explicit, otherwise it will be unnoticed. sankoku gives all of たぐい(類い) as 文(and gives no collocations). Given the frequency on this term vs. the xrefs, this seems fair at least on this structure. Also [rare]-ish. |

|
Comments: | I see this has been previously discussed. Recommend doing the merge previously considered, with むずかる being marked as irregular/erroneous/nonstandard in some way. Extra datapoint: sankoku does not give kanji *at all* for the xref むずかる(and has no entry at all for むずがる). More comments at xref, but in modern Japanese neither むずかる nor もずがる have a kanji form(except maybe in old texts, or as a curiosity). No one should *choose* use use 憤 to write either, unless they are deliberately playing games. On furigana.info, 憤 is basically never used for this reading. The 0.2% むず at the bottom is someone who wrote 憤かり, which is not a standard orthography anyway. For the moment marked [col] for lack of anything else. It's prescriptively an error. here's asahi shinbun telling their readers they're wrong: http://www.asahi.com/special/kotoba/quiz/SDI201505204648.html Of course, the fact that such an article exists is a testament to the fact that this *is* a word in practice. Still, I think it could be comfortably merged into the xref, and benefit from one set of notes/xrefs. |

Comments: | Could possibly be combined with むずかる. Though the ref doesn't give the kanji (憤る) as a headword, so I'm not sure if someone would actually write 憤る with the reading むずがる. Also, this would presumably be [uk] if it were given the kanji, while I'm not sure if むずかる should be [uk] or not (due to 憤る hits for いきどおる confusing things). |

Comments: | Is "switch to the offensive" a particularly good gloss? This word is used by NHK, Mainichi etc. to describe the Ukrainian counteroffensive. I'm not sure "switch to the offensive" needs to be included at all but even if it does, I don't think it should lead. |

Comments: | I don't think "appreciation fee" works at all. If that's on Reverso it's a good reminder to take the translations on there with a pinch of salt. I don't like "observation fee" either - it's too literal, and googling it I just get Japanese pages. I came across the word in reference to maiko dance shows, but most hits are for movie theaters. In those cases, "ticket price" would obviously be the best translation, so I think it should stay. |
