Comments: | Nothing like Stephen Kraus' argument, was stated before, so the re-addition of the lit gloss, was still perfectly justified. Stephen Kraus' argument is a decent argument against a lit gloss, in this instance. I'd argue, however, that the only gloss that isn't that dissimilar to a literal gloss, is the last one. The "the weak become the victim of the strong" one ...and I don't think that one, is really all that accurate. (it's meaning is too specific/strict/narrow, to describe the meaning of the idiom. It's closer to the literal meaning, which is more narrow, but...) It seems more like a very contrived attempt at a gloss that is similar to the literal meaning. Thus, it is better to just remove it. ...which leaves a situation, where a lit gloss would seem to be fully justified, by Stephen Kraus' standard. |

Comments: | I think [lit] glosses probably only make sense when they're substantially different from the others. I.e. when an idiomatic expression means something completely different on its face from its idiomatic meaning, and when such a difference requires some supplemental explanation for the reader. For example, 山が見える could definitely be used both figuratively or literally, so having a [lit] gloss makes a lot of sense. For a lot of these [yoji] entries, the [lit] glosses don't add much and often sound a bit awkward. |

Comments: | I think it's helpful in this case. A lot of people looking for the Japanese word for "raisin" will search "raisins". Note that the gloss for 豌豆 is "green peas". 干しぶどう and レーズン should be consistent, though. |

3. | A* 2017-02-05 11:58:54 Johan Råde <...address hidden...> | |

Comments: | I just had occasion to look at all the "payday"/"pay day" entries, and this seems quite unlike the others. In particular, 給料 is receiving, 支払 feels like "paying". I.e. this is a "payday" only from the employer's perspective. The most common use of 支払日 seems to be on a credit card statement. eijiro has: 賃金の支払日 payday〔不可算〕 and 給与の支払日 payday〔不可算〕 But I think, again, this is from the employers perspective? Here's a site from a business regulation point of view, saying when you are-and-are-not allowed to set your employees pay day. https://jsite.mhlw.go.jp/tokyo-roudoukyoku/yokuaru_goshitsumon/tingin/q4.html Q4.賃金の支払日を「月の第4金曜日に支払う」と定めてもよいでしょうか? On another site, google translates this: ほとんどの会社は月に1回の給与の支払日を決めていて as: most companies set a monthly salary payment date and pay your salary accordingly I think this is more appropriate here than "payday". |
