▶ onigiri ▶ rice ball (often triangular, sometimes with a filling and wrapped in nori)
|
8. | A 2023-10-27 22:00:49 Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I hadn't notice Rene had added "pol". |
|
7. | A* 2023-10-27 09:00:58 Brian Krznarich <...address hidden...>
Refs: | https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/おにぎり https://selftaughtjapanese.com/2014/03/21/japanese-honorific-prefixes-お-and-ご-o-and-go/ 2. Words that change meaning when the honorific prefix is added にぎり = a type of sushi where a slice of raw fish is placed upon an elongated rice ball おにぎり = a rice ball, often triangular shaped, with nori on the outside and something inside (fish,...) おにぎり 2946636 99.0% お握り 28141 0.9% 御握り 2493 0.1% |
|
Comments: | But is this [pol]? (etymologically, sure...) That would suggest that にぎり is a non-polite version. That doesn't seem to be the case. We have a "rice ball" sense on にぎり that is tagged[abbr] for 握り飯, and 握り飯 points here. But this isn't お握り飯. Maybe this is just philosophical question. I certainly won't be bothered if [pol] stays. |

Orientation is how a building is positioned in relation to the sun’s paths in different seasons, as well as to prevailing wind patterns. In passive design, it is also about how living and sleeping areas are designed and positioned, either to take advantage of the sun and wind, or be protected from their effects. https://www.bobvila.com/articles/why-it-matters-which-direction-your-home-faces/ “Location, location, location!” may be a well-known real estate rallying cry, but the orientation of a house is important as well. House orientation refers to the position of a structure on its site, and it’s typically described by the cardinal direction that the front facade faces—for example, a home with its main entrance facing north would be described as a north-facing house. |
|
Comments: | This use of "aspect" was perhaps not wrong, but quite ambiguous on its own. It's also not a word I would have thought to use for this, though it clearly is used. However all the immediate hits I get are from australia and the uk (could be because I'm searching from Japan). I don't get the feeling from web results that this is so much of a "word" as it is the question of *which* cardinal 向き your house is going to be. So this is just A+B, and not super common. 向き[1] is direction; orientation; aspect; exposure So there's really not much point... Was going to vote "delete", but I guess it's a kind-of cute entry with all the xrefs tying together a nice concept in Japanese. But you may wish to delete it anyway. I believe a house can have multiple 向き's. (ie. A south facing and north facing side, with the walls blocked by other buildings, or something to that effect)... |

There are other terms such as 睡眠不足 (current entry) and 睡眠遮断 which are in the references and which are used for the medical condition. 現責 seems only to be used to refer to the Edo period punishment. I don't think it meets the "term itself is still in current use" criterion for [hist]. |

Refs: | https://www.edrdg.org/wiki/index.php/Editorial_policy > "arch" (archaism). This is typically used to indicate that the term was primarily used during or before the Edo period. > The "hist" (historical) term does not fall into this category. It refers to a past event (e.g. battle, ceremony) or concept (e.g. an art-form common in the 18th century), but the term itself is still in current use. |
|
Comments: | I'm inclined to agree that [hist] makes more sense than [arch] for specific concepts that have not been replaced by modern exact equivalents. But it seems this is contrary to the current editorial policy. The argument on 2858694 by Jim was that the term must still be in current use for it to be [hist]. I don't know if hypothetical papers written about the subject would make the term qualify as being still in use. |

Comments: | To be clear, this looked to me like it *should* be the equivalent to the English idiom "tailor-made", so I went off hunting for that and found someone to agree with me. 誂える is "to have made to order", this feels like an almost-identical derivation in English and Japanese. Wouldn't have edited this all, except for this and the back-ref are the first two terms that come back when searching "ends-with-向き", and they were obviously the same, but not aligned. I've reversed the xrefs (and not even cross-ref'd). daijs makes the rare statement: 多く「おあつらえむき」の形で https://dictionary.goo.ne.jp/word/誂え向き/ eijiro only gives おあつらえ向き forms, and if you google あつらえ向き you'll be hard pressed to find it without お. Book results reveal some unadorned 誂え向き. I just attempted to remove [pol] from onigiri, so it feels inconsistent to put it here if this is the only form used in practice. But perhaps the whole expression is polite and that's the reason it's here, in which case it's fine. Usage with な seems very limited, with very few collocations except 場所. xref/backref has adj-na there, but I think the entry is better without. |

I want to say "aimed at", "designed for", but in practice these are situational and not so common. xref offers them as a suggestion, and explains the term. It's funny, Japanese teachers are always berating us foreigners for saying gaijin, but we use it to describe ourselves all the time (at least, the otherwise well-treated Americans certainly do). |

Refs: | 房総半島 122302 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiba_Prefecture Chiba Prefecture largely consists of the Bōsō Peninsula, which encloses the eastern side of Tokyo Bay and separates it from Kanagawa Prefecture. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bōsō_Peninsula The Bōsō Peninsula (房総半島, Bōsō-hantō) is a peninsula that encompasses the entirety of Chiba Prefecture on Honshu, the largest island of Japan. Etymology The peninsula gets its name and kanji from the former provinces that were located there: Awa (安房), Kazusa (上総) and Shimōsa (下総). The Japan Meteorological Agency refers to the west and east coasts of the peninsula as Uchibō (内房) and Sotobō (外房) respectively. |
|
Comments: | Or Boso (Bōsō is used on wikipedia, but not, for example, travel websites which just say Boso) Was going to ask to move this to jmdict for xref purposes with Chiba, and in particular the terms Uchibō (内房) and Sotobō (外房), which are used in Japanese weather forecasts. But I guess those can also be treated as "place" names, and all live here (minus the actual xref back to Chiba). |

Refs: | https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/都電荒川線 愛称は「東京さくらトラム」 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toden_Arakawa_Line The Toden Arakawa Line (都電荒川線, Toden Arakawa-sen), branded as the Tokyo Sakura Tram (東京さくらトラム, Tōkyō Sakura Toramu),[1] is a hybrid light rail/tram line in Tokyo, Japan, operated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Transportation (Toei). https://www.kotsu.metro.tokyo.jp/eng/services/streetcar.html What is Tokyo Sakura Tram (Toden Arakawa Line)? |

Comments: | I also rode this line occasionally around Waseda. Never heard of it addressed without the "toden" prefix, even if we don't usually include companies/management in the names. Some xrefs to follow. |

Comments: | I saw your comment earlier on the Token Arakawa line, so I was happy to add this. I've also taken this train, just a handful of times though. I've never heard a Japanese person call it this as a tool for commuting. It seems to be a cutesy marketing term for foreigners, as one of the last remaining "tram" lines in Tokyo. And I think you're still right, when they say "it's a nick name", I don't think it's a nickname Japanese commuters gave it ;) Ah, wikipedia has a note. The name was voted and adopted in 2017, explicitly for marketing. [4]。 And this is what that became(so, perhaps, mission accomplished?): Tokyo Sakura Tram: Experience Tokyo's Secret Neighborhoods, Off the Beaten Path! https://livejapan.com/en/in-tokyo/in-pref-tokyo/in-ikebukuro/article-a0001665/ Tokyo has an adorable little tram called the Sakura Tram! It’s the nickname for the Toden Arakawa Line, one of only two streetcar lines serving the massive metropolis.... |
