5. | A 2023-10-25 01:08:23 Robin Scott <...address hidden...> | |
Refs: | daijr: 野球で,バントまたはフライによって打者自身はアウトとなるが,走者を進塁または得点させる打撃。 Collins (sacrifice): a sacrifice bunt or sacrifice fly Oxford (sacrifice): a bunted or fly ball which puts the batter out but allows a base runner to advance. chujiten: 彼の犠打で2者進塁した. His sacrifice moved both runners along. https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/sacrifice bunt https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/sacrifice_hit |
|
Comments: | Simply "sacrifice" seems to be the best translation here. Merriam Webster and Wiktionary treat "sacrifice hit" as a synonym of "sacrifice fly". Although 犠牲バント isn't the most common term for "sacrifice bunt", I think this looks neater. We have an x-ref on 犠牲バント to 送りバント. |

|
Comments: | Came because this would have needed to be "sacrifice bunt", but found other info as well. See google search. As in English (apparently) a "sacrifice hit" usually means "bunt", not "fly". However, by having "sacrifice hit" here, we allow the same ambiguous option ("probably hit", but maybe also "fly"). It would be odd to ever gloss this as "sacrifice fly", for that you would use 犠飛 or 犠牲フライ directly. I almost don't want to xref 犠牲バント at all due to its relative infrequency, but it is explanatory (and is the wiki headword/"technical" term). |

Comments: | I don't think this is an obvious/self-evident extension. The back-ref'd synonym 隻腕 had only "one-armed person", which I feel otherwise would need to be removed entirely. I don't think as a noun this means "one-armed person" by itself(same with the backref). A lot of "片腕腕立て伏せ" looks like potential machine translation, but here's a one-armed pushup by an authentic looking Japanese guy: http://hinazakura621.blog.fc2.com/blog-entry-437.html |

Comments: | The "fly" terms are almost equally common, and I think the double xref makes sense. I like the structural comparison between 犠飛 and 犠打 vs. other formulations of "sac bunt" (wikipedia claims the rare term 犠打飛 even exists). The user will get the other formulations of "sac bunt" if they follow the xref. Theoretically, 犠打 can encompass a sacrifice fly as well, so there is some additional utility there vs. other options. |

Comments: | Some comments at 犠打. 犠打 is generally "sac bunt", and is used as the abbreviation in baseball statistics. 送りバント seems the most common way to say sac bunt (I realized this after editing 犠打) If you have to pick, it seems more natural to me for "sac fly" and "sac bunt" to xref each other, as this is a common and logical pairing.
