The "approx." works fine. We moved to metric nearly 50 years ago. The beef is priced $N per kg.
4. A* 2023-10-21 05:53:36  Brian Krznarich <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
I would suggest we pick one, either "3.03 cm", or "approx. 3 cm". I personally find that latter more appropriate in most cases this dictionary would be used. "approx." warns the user that more digits are available if they need to do precise calculations in 寸.

This is a common issue in jmdict with numerical conversions, and there are probably other terms worth visiting, but I'll test the waters with this one.

The U.S. will never move to metric because $3/pound for beef is much simpler than $3 per 0.454kg...

Relationship between tsubo and square meter
One tsubo is about 3.30578 square meters and one square meter is about 0.3025 tsubo. In reality, the fraction continues endlessly, but ... this "tsubo" is often written as 3.3 square meters
  Comments:
Comments at 一寸 and 坪当たり. I think other numbers here listed as "approx." should also be rounded, but I'll stick to [1] at the moment, which is fairly well supported in mainstream literature (in English and Japanese).

Major Japanese real estate website:
https://www.homes.co.jp/cont/living/living_00088/
1坪は約3.30578平方メートル、1平方メートルは約0.3025坪です。
but:
この「坪」については3.3平方メートルと書かれている場合も多いのですが...

And note, the error between 3.31 and 3.30578 is nearly as large as 3.30 and 3.30578.

Relationship between tsubo and square meter
One tsubo is about 3.30578 square meters and one square meter is about 0.3025 tsubo. In reality, the fraction continues endlessly, but it is not practical to make it smaller.

This "tsubo" is often written as 3.3 square meters, but when calculated with 3.3, an error of about 0.05 square meters will occur for 100 square meters. Although it is a slight difference, it can be a big difference in the amount of money in metropolitan areas with high land prices...
  Comments:
I could see 坪当 maybe appearing in some very compact real estate marketing, or I wouldn't bother at all.

Would be nice to indicate why this exists (real-estate pricing, a la price-per-square-foot). The suumo article ties this and the xref together.

This "(area)" note is used only once in jmdictdb, so it doesn't seem to be a standard. Just giving the area seems more useful to me. 3.31 meters feels like too many significant digits for this use case. Google says a tsubo is 3.30579 sq meters. Probably the entry for 坪 should be edited.

liters in 1891. The gō is the traditional amount used for a serving of rice and a cup of sake in Japanese cuisine. Although the gō is no longer used as an official unit, 1-gō measuring cups or their 180 mL metric equivalents are often included with Japanese rice cookers.

0.33 meters squared = 0.1089 square meters. Since I'm here, I'll make one other unit suggestion.

I believe it is accurate to say that these expressions are essentially interchangeable, but that the xref is more common.

xref to help keep these in sync. The glosses should match.

I like "following" but "after" seems more common. We don't usually do variable substitution, so this is interesting.

completing bidirectional xref.

looking at our other entries, it's simpler to change this to "pupil dilation" than to change everything else ("contraction of the pupil", etc.). eijiro also gives "dilated pupil". This is certainly usable in some contexts, but perhaps more of an adaptation.

Anyway, as long as the entries are consistent.

  Comments:
Very common term.

Would be nice to explain that
1. this is for real estate
2. it is 3.3 square meters

The xref somewhat solves both problems. However, of the two, "price per ~3.3 square meters" is actually a useful gloss on its own. So that's what I included.

  Comments:
In 2011, on the xref 2426510, Jim remarked: "個当り needs to be in its own entry (if there at all.)"

This seems like an odd entry. Surely the morphological parse of 1個あたり is [1個]あたり, not 1[個あたり]. I think that alone is a strong case to just delete this.

I got to here from 坪当たり. In the that case, it is unambiguous because no one counts prices in units of "two tsubos". Quite a special case. I don't *think* this is an [abbr] of 1個当り.

see 度目 for this "N variable" trick, although I think we usually prefer "..." these days. I think this will probably get deleted in any case.

  Comments:
see notes at 合. If we wish to give a precise definition for some reason, that would be 2401/13310 liters. (0.18039068369646882043576258452292...). Though this definition was not consistent across time anyway.

I think 0.3306 should be simplified too(0.33, or even 1/3 square meter), but I've touched too much at once as it is.

Note: for consistency I think the U.S. spellings should lead, and we are generally inconsistent with including British spellings (except where we only have the British spellings...). This parenthetical approach (metres) would probably be my vote, if we're going to actually do this everywhere.,

Two things I've observed trying to reformulate 坪 entries according to jmdict's standards:
- we almost never abbreviate "square" as "sq.".
- we are quite lax in writing meter/metre in all of the places that we could. It's done maybe 1/4 of the time, and basically never in these unit-conversion parentheticals. If only one form is given, it seems like it should be the U.S. spelling.

(consistent spelling makes it easier to find these related terms)

Time to pull the plug on this.
I did consider 使用機材 but it's very A+B and much less common than a heap of other 使用XX compounds which a probably more worthy of entries.
4. D* 2023-10-21 03:13:07
  Comments:
I understand the argument against including this, but it's is used in delay announcements at airports and onboard planes, and as such seems potentially very helpful to users (whether NJ residents of Japan or foreign tourists travelling here). If it weren't frequently used in the already mentioned context, I would agree an entry is not needed.
At any rate, I think 使用機材 definitely should be an entry.
3. D* 2023-10-21 00:43:23  Jim Breen <...address hidden...>

使用 is used at in 使用XX contexts to mean the current/in-use XX. There are squillion compounds using it which are far more common than 使用機. I don't think this is needed.
