Comments: | I don't mind "attraction" over "obsession" or "prebubescent" over "young" but I'm not seeing the point of adding rare words like "gynephilic" to secondary glosses (as this meaning is already obvious from the second gloss). It's true a woman could flippantly call herself a "lolicon" despite not being a man but that's true for a lot of gendered language/words and without qualifiers, I don't think anybody would ever assume this word refers to anything but a man. |

Comments: | sexual obsession doesn't make much sense, kokugos tend to use 性愛の対象 which is closer to sexual attraction using "young girls" (or "very young girls" by gg5) seems pretty euphemistic, kokugos do use 少女 which is ambiguous but nobody would use ロリコン for someone attracted to a 17yo girl. + they often do add 幼女 to be more clear, so prepubescent is a better rendering in my opinion. "gynephilic" (or a synonym) is needed because "pedophile" alone implies that ロリコン could be someone sexually attracted to prepubescent boys as well which is not the case. i guess "esp. male" is the most controversial change. i think this image of ロリコン is due to the male-dominated otaku culture (and most pedophiles being male). it's fair to include it, but it doesn't seem *necessary* to be a ロリコン which is probably why many kokugos don't mention it all. |

Comments: | Given the extensive discussion last year about edits to this entry, I think case should be made for these proposed changes. Justification for the inclusion of gynephilic is needed. |

I doubt "self-denial" is the intention of the school motto. Related to 自制 (eijiro's gloss for self-mastery), but the terms are related: https://reibuncnt.jp/26141#toc2 and: https://eow.alc.co.jp/search?q=克己 克己心がある be master of oneself Wikipedia page on the xref for self-denial, 自己否定, uses this term as part of a definition/explanation: https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/自己否定 自己否定とは、我慢し、自粛し、克己することであり[3]、自分以外の存在のために自分の楽しみや欲望、利益をあきらめる自己犠牲・献身であり、自分以外の存在のために試練を受け、辛い目にあったりすることである[9]。 google glosses as "Self-denial means patience, self-restraint, and self-mastery" |
|
Comments: | Recommend removing stats([news1] at least). This shows up as "common", but this appears to be a common only as a name(hence news1). Google results are names. News results are names, plus some 克己心 sprinkled in. Book results are books whose author's name includes "克己". I don't think this is [adj-no]. One high の ngram is "克己のお気楽な日々 1356". But google reveals a longer phrase: "川口克己のお気楽な日々"/. Other (rare) uses are more like "pertaining to...". I think "self-mastery" might be a better gloss(see some refs). "self-denial", in English, has a nuance of altruism (denial of one's self for the benefit of others) that I don't think applies here. Even though this is about "denying one's own desires for one's own betterment" (which is the definition self-mastery). self-mastery is probably better for the high school slogan too, or at least "self-discipline/self-control". |

Comments: | Splitting sense 1. らんる only has the first two meanings. It's also marked as〔文〕in meikyo and sankoku. I'll split it out into a separate entry. We wouldn't usually put adj-f and adj-na together but I think it's appropriate here. Daijr has a 形動 sense but it typically appears directly before the noun. Sankoku has a "造語成分" sense for this usage. We don't typically use the gikun tag when the entry only has one reading but maybe we should. This is a discussion for GitHub but it might be better if [gikun] went on the kanji, not the reading, so that we're more like the kokugos. We would no longer be able to merge gikun/jukujikun readings with other readings but I think I prefer that approach. |

Refs: | https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cat's_paw_(tool) A cat's paw or cat's claw is a metal hand tool used for extracting nails, typically from wood, using leverage. A standard tool in carpentry, it has a sharp V-shaped tip on one or both ends, which is driven into the wood by a hammer to capture the nailhead. Essentially, it is a smaller, more ergonomic, purpose-designed crowbar. https://dictionary.goo.ne.jp/word/鍛冶屋/ 2 釘を抜くのに用いる、鉄棒の一端がL字形に曲がり、釘を挟む割れ目のついた工具。 |
|
Comments: | I'm not sure how to mark it, but [2] is usually written in katakana specifically (and [1] probably never is...). You see this in shopping results, and on product labels. I doubt kanji are ever used for [2] in practice. It seems that this matching (カジヤ = "cat's paw") is new information to the internet. But I'm fairly confident on this one. Colloquialism for colloquialism(although, I guess the English has become more of a legitimate term). The definitions exactly match from daijs and English wikipedia. There is actually a picture in sankoku, and I recognized it immediately. I framed houses in college, and always had one on my belt. A cat's paw/かじや is a mini crowbar for yanking nails out of things (you hammer the head straight into the wood, then pry the nail out). Here's a カジヤ : https://www.monotaro.com/g/00543119/ Here's a cat's paw (of all things, a Japanese import, but that's a coincidence): https://tftools.com/en-jp/products/mokuba-precision-japanese-cats-paw-nail-bar Second link has a video of the tool in use, not that it matters. "prybar" and "crowbar" alone are more ambiguous than necessary. If you see カジヤ in Japanese, you immediately know its size and purpose (it is not a 3-foot long crowbar, for example). |

Comments: | Just edited the entry for 打物. The daijs entry for 打物師 actually says nothing about weapons. Not only that, but swordsmith implies swords, and 打物[1] is *any* metal weapon. I'm not sure if there is an (esp. of weapons) sense here or not. daijs: 金属を打って器物を作る職人。 Seems like an 打ち物師 is anyone who hammers metal into stuff. Doesn't have to be a blacksmith (iron). Comments: | I won't be surprised if "safari" comes back because of the cited refs, but how often do we think that this term, in the wild, means "animal hunting expedition(in africa)"? This seems to muddy the waters when there is a very simple word for Safari in particular: サファリ 503366 92.6% 冒険旅行 40134 7.4% I would suggest "adventurous trip" over "adventuresome trip" if we want that kind of gloss(google gives for more results for the former). ("adventurous trip" was my thought, but I see eijiro also has it). "adventure tourism" comes from reverso, seems reasonable to me in some contexts. I think there a number of cases where "旅行" might be reasonably glossed as "tourism". "safari" seems like a kind of 冒険旅行, but it seems overly specific as a gloss here. Maybe in old Japanese texts this was the word they used for "safari". It seems, minimally, like a [dated] gloss, and we have no way to identify that. "expedition", or simply "an adventure" (also from eijiro) probably work at times: 冒険旅行からの帰国 return from an expedition 冒険旅行に出かける go [set out] on an adventure |

Comments: | I think [chn] should include words used by adults when speaking to children. I mean kids only say あんよ etc. because that's what their parents use those words with them. I'm sure some toddlers pick up on this to some extent too. I don't really think the note is necessary. |

5. | A* 2023-09-22 00:48:42 Robin Scott <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | Sense 2 is quite tricky to explain. I don't think children use the word in this way. Is [chn] still applicable here? |
