I can see the argument for keeping かいもん on this entry (as it's not really a separate word) but I don't like that it introduces unsightly restriction tags (if 買いもの and 買いもん are included as surface forms).
I think this is another illustration of how "hidden" readings/surface forms could be very useful. It would allow us to include -もん forms on other -物/-者 entries without adding any restr tags. I'd argue that even the reading doesn't need to be visible; what matters is that a -もん search takes you to the right entry.

It's super common in Kansai and probably all or most other western Japanese dialects as well (博多通りもん for example is one of FUkuoka's most famous omiyagegashi), and probably in parts of eastern Japan and even Hokkaido too. 物/者 can in many (if not all) commonly used constructions be pronounced もん. I think we should include it in more entries to demonstrate this. I don't think we should split them out because they are really just a different way to pronunciate the same word and as such they meet our 2/3 guideline.

I thought we were doing them on a case-by-case basis, and given the expressed interest in decluttering having two simpler entries didn't seem a bad move. I'd like to see the impact of similar handling of other 物 and 者 cases before attempting a general rule on ...もん forms.

Something I've never wanted to do is drive too much of the display format. Wikipedia does it a bit, which is why it does look different. (Best to discuss this on the mailing list.)

Do you see the same blocky font at http://ja.wikipedia.org ? They also use <html lang="ja" ...>. TBH, I thought that specifying lang="ja" was standard good practice. Perhaps there is something else that needs to be done to make it work smoothly on all platforms?

Yep, that's great, setting that option seems to have fixed it, certainly for the character 直. (It does not seem to have worked on the page I am typing in right now, but that is not such a big deal.) If there is no downside, perhaps this option should be enabled by default? By the way, I noticed a small problem along the way. With cookies disabled in the browser, the "customise" button on the customisation page tells you that it has saved the choices even when it has not.

I have added an option to WWWJDIC's Customize page to force the use of "<HTML lang="ja">" for all pages. See if this fixes the problem for you.

I believe that the WWWJDIC web pages can, and probably should, specify the language in which "Chinese" characters are to be displayed. I do this with some of my own self-crafted pages, using the "lang = " parameter, to prevent exactly this problem. For example, the following displays the same character in both "Chinese style" and "Japanese style":

wwwjdic for some reason changed its default encoding to UTF-8 (from EUC-JP) not too many days ago. UTF-8 may mess with automatic font selection in browsers, since the browser may not be intelligent enough to choose a Japanese font.

WWWJDIC does not specify the font; that's a matter for you and your browser. That image you quoted is the Chinese glyph for the character. I don't know anything much about IE11, but with Firefox you can get in and set your preferred fonts. I presume you can do the same with IE, so see if you can get it back to the Japanese ones.

Hi, for me (IE11, Win7), the kanji 直 displays at WWWJDIC like the right-hand character at http://i57.tinypic.com/311l4yd.png, which, as far as I understand it, is not standard for Japanese. I'm not sure if it has always been like this or has changed recently (the whole font at the WWWJDIC website has changed for me recently -- I wondered if the two things may be connected). The character continues to display correctly (like left-hand image) for me on other websites and in other applications when the context is Japanese.

Marcus, this edit removes a sense you added in 2012. I notice that both your examples do have たって, and it seems to be coing from 経って. MeCab says たっ + て. Do you have a view on the proposal? I'm rather neutral - it's up the front for historical reasons.

I'm quite comfortable adding ってのは to the dictionary, but I suspect it should be added to the と言うのは entry rather than here.
I've been looking through the usage of ってのは and というのは in the examples in GG5 (there are quite a few of each), and I'm starting to suspect there is a different nuance with ってのは.

I did not want to amend the above, but often in text [as demonstrated by the mass of results on Google] "ってのは" is used in much the same way as the above and, in context, equals "というのは". Your [A] references also show quite a few examples. Could "ってのは" be included in this entry to assist the searcher? One piece of text which I was reading was "一人っきりってのは". Helpfully, you have the first part [一人っきり], but not the last part.

If I am in the wrong road on this one, then a correct entry would be very helpful.
