9. | A* 2022-09-20 13:08:53 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I agree こんにちわ can be considered an ik of "今日は". I think it makes sense to look at absolute numbers when deciding what to include as sk/sK (something that should maybe be discussed on the Github). I don't think it makes sense to add sk/sK forms that barely register in the ngrams (which we have been doing in some obscure-ish entries), but these misspelled forms (that I think used to be included in the こんにちわ entry or somewhere) do get a couple of thousand hits. I wouldn't mind excluding them but since removing them in the first place did meet with some opposition from Jim (IIRC?), I figured he'd want to include them now that we can do so pretty painlessly. |

7. | A* 2022-09-19 20:57:53 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I think こんにちわ should be tagged as irregular. Also, given that こんにちわ is pronounced identically to こんにちは, I think we can consider こんにちわ a reading of 今日は (and therefore drop the [nokanji] tag). I don't think "used during daytime" note is needed. It can be inferred from the glosses. Do we really need こにちわ and こにちは, even as sk forms? Aren't they just typos? |

Comments: | The more I look at this, the more I'm convinced it's just one sense. Both senses in sankoku could correspond to "admonish". The "懇々と諭す" example for (sankoku's) sense 1 is also used in this GG5 example: "その店の主人は子供たちの盗みの非を懇々と諭した. The store owner lectured children at length on the wrongs of stealing." |

Comments: | We do not "blindly follow the other JEs" at all. There are many entries where we have taken quite different approaches to glosses. If you want to make a case I suggest you avoid weakening it by throwing in anonymous insults. The JEs are not alone in their translations. All the kokugo explanations are couched as ticking off subordinates to some degree. I see if you drop the sentence you quote into Google Translate it offers: "Like Shiori admonishing a girl, he speaks gently and slowly." So poor old Googe with its massive NN analysis of parallel texts came up with the wrong translation too. That said, there is a difference between admonishing and remonstrating on one hand, and explaining and persuading on the other. While no reference does it, I think it's probably appropriate to split it into senses. The parallels between さとす and さとる are very loose. I know Daijirin comments "「さとる」に対する他動詞" but I think that's stating a contrast rather than an equivalence. |

Comments: | I'll preface this with a question: if this is the transitive equivalent of satoru (to understand), why must the glosses be so wildly different? Here is an example I dug up. Context: they are on an uninhabited island. they found an unconscious girl, brought her to a cave to safety. She just woke up and seems alarmed 「恐がらなくてもいいのよ‥‥‥別にあなたに危害を加えるつもりで、連れてきたわけじゃないわ」 詩織が少女を諭すように、優しくゆっくりとした口調で話しかける。 I'm sure there are 1000s of other examples just like that outside JE example sentences. It might even be the most common use for this word. Now, which glosses might fit this sentence? × to admonish × to remonstrate △ to explain thoroughly △ to make see the reason (in) ○ to persuade × to warn ○ to reason with ○ to make (someone) understand ISTM that saito is the only JE here that has the balls to try to actually translate the japanese word. in contrast the modern JEs each trot out a similar parade of synonyms that are only tangentially related to the original word, that only fit one context. I wish JMDICT would not blindly follow the other JEs when this happens. and boy does it happen a lot. Food for thought, for this entry, as well as others. |

Refs: | https://kotobank.jp/jeword/純朴 a naive [an unsophisticated] person I kind of liked these, I feel like they are sometimes applicable. https://eikaiwa.dmm.com/uknow/questions/3054/ Down to earth Honest Down-to-earth honest personality Down-home straightforward personality "simple-hearted" https://imperfectatbest.com/tag/happiness/ Let’s see how it can be interpreted. In the first place, we are not simple-hearted anymore. While small children burst into a fit of laughter in the next moment after throwing a tantrum, we, as grownups, like to make things complicated. 一つは、子供のような純朴さを失った。 Is this because of youth or because of devotion to a great cause at the expense of simple, if not naïve, happiness one could enjoy? 若かったからなのか、純朴とは言わないまでも、 homely BRITISH (of a place or surroundings) simple but cosy and comfortable, as in one's own home. "a modern hotel with a homely atmosphere" NORTH AMERICAN (of a person) unattractive in appearance. 純朴 73043 96.2% 純朴が 105 0.1% 純朴を 201 0.3% 純朴は 56 0.1% 純朴さが 1269 1.7% 純朴さを 974 1.3% 純朴さは 263 0.3% 純朴さ 6464 |
|
Comments: | I looked for some possibly-more-suitable glosses (and left refs), but I don't think I found anything reliably better. I mostly just wanted to remove "homely", which for me means "unattractive". I don't know what to do if the British and English are in opposition. Was "homely" from the British English sense perhaps? There doesn't seem to be anything in this term related to physical appearance. The "proper" noun is 純朴さ(also listed in sankoku), so removing [n] seems like better advice (even if there are straggling exceptions). "naive" seems to be perfectly correct, except that there seems to be a strictly positives connotation. If that's the case, we might want to point it out somehow. (I gave "innocent", vs. the colloquial interpretation "stupid" , e.g. "don't be so naive"). sankoku doesn't mark it as 文 or anything else, and we have 70k ngrams. But like a lot of these terms, they aren't necessarily so common. I came across this funny q&a: Q: 純朴を使った例文を教えて下さい。 出来るだけ日常で使う自然な表現でお願いします。 https://ja.hinative.com/questions/13916533 A: 日常では使いません。 |

Comments: | The Kanji Haitani list is no longer an issue since we removed all the tags (over 1000) which were unsupported by other sources: https://github.com/JMdictProject/JMdictIssues/issues/72 This entry, 波及効果, is also in a yoji dictionary published by shogakukan: https://kotobank.jp/word/波及効果-2236979 The gist of the linked wikipedia article seems to be that even Japanese editors have a difficult time categorizing and selecting four character compounds to include in yoji dictionaries. It says the editors of 『四字熟語ひとくち話』 (Iwanami, 2007) argued that it's ultimately a matter of opinion and interest. In the case of 波及効果, the consensus among dictionary publishers seems to be that it is an idiomatic yoji. I don't know how else we could be consistent with the usage of this tag other than by appealing to these references. |
|
6. | A* 2022-09-21 15:09:37 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I don't think there's any good reasons to go with them. I think 波及効果 and the 40 or so other XX効果 entries in Jmdict can only be said to be yojijukugo in the very broadest sense - that they're compounds consisting of 4 characters. The original idea back in 2014 was to have a tag for words that are obviously idiomatic or proverb-like expressions, like 弱肉強食. I actually suggested to make the tag [iyoji] for "idiomatic yojijukugo" to make it painstakingly clear exactly what we mean by the tag, but Jim and Rene didn't think it would be necessary. (I've long been unhappy with the Kanji Haitani list bulk update and even suggested in 2018 we scrap the yoji tag altogether because the term is just too ambiguous - see https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/四字熟語#四字熟語の範囲 - and we're being very inconsistent with how we're applying it) |
