OK, but let's use the full gloss then because "gibberish"

Marcus's comment from a fork: "Without the "of" it seems the verb is transitive, that the secret is the object rather than the subject. I think an overly elliptical style often makes entries harder to understand."

I agree with Marcus. Our usual style (at least for the past few years) has been to include "of" for intransitive verbs/expressions. Sometimes it makes no real difference (as in "to be exposed") but often it does (as in "to leak out"), so for consistency's sake I think "of" should always been included.

Given the deliberately elliptical style that is common in dictionary entries, I don't think the addition of "of a", etc. is much help. "to be exposed (lie, improper behaviour, etc.)" and "to be exposed (of a lie, improper behaviour, etc.)" really mean the same thing. I'd always go for the shorter form.

It essentially was as you said it's "more common" but didn't bother to explain how you arrived at that conclusion. Kokugos very rarely lead with senses that are considered incorrect or colloquial when there's a more "proper" meaning that's still in common use.

  Comments:
I think there is merit to the proposed edit to this entry, and the anonymous contributor is clearly passionate about the quality of this project (as we all are). But this isn't the quality of discourse that we aspire to have here.
21. A* 2023-12-21 23:21:58
  Comments:
i have made a very clear and concise case for the edit, you're just totally ignoring half of what i said
i'm still going to repeat it even more clearly for you
1. the proper sense is more popular (fantasizing how this might changed in the last few years with no stats whatsoever is not a real counter-argument, especially in a low birth rate country like japan. also notice in the graph how the "不意に" actually *decreases* in the youngest generation)
2. almost all the kokugos (and gg5) only list the proper meaning
3. the few that do have the improper meaning list it as "あやまり" or at the very least tag it as "俗" *after* the proper meaning (see sankoku, which is much more considerate of slang and 若者言葉)

if i had to add something
4. a good amount of people use jmdict in their life for translation work or to enjoy novels more easily, and literature almost exclusively uses "おもむろに" in the proper meaning

man, i genuinely have no idea why people have to get so combative and rude and just engage in bad faith for a simple edit like this
20. A* 2023-12-21 22:46:06  Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
When you want to argue for an edit that's been rejected once or twice, actually argue for it and do so with new or more detailed arguments and do it without reinstating the old edit. Just briefly restating that you think something js "weird" isn't going to win anybody over. The link Robin posted is 10 years old and he summarized it saying the "erroneous" sense dominates among those under 50 - extrapolated that would mean it dominates among those under 60 today.
19. A* 2023-12-21 14:37:23
  Comments:
i still think it makes little sense to start with the sense that is "improper" and less common when *all* the kokugos either start or only have the proper sense (gg5 too)
sankoku tags it "俗" (appropriately)

This word doesn't actually refer to the "eve" itself. It refers to the 催し held on the night before an event or holiday.

In the case of something like Christmas Eve, "eve" may be sufficient. However, in the case of something like the "pre-event" (rehearsal show) linked above as a reference, the emphasis is on the event itself and not the "eve" as a temporal concept.

I think the line is rather blurred. My instinct was that it's slang because it's a relatively recent coinage, it's a pun, and it's not that widely used (or so I assumed – I'd never heard it before). But I see it's used in hundreds of tweets a day as well as a lot of recent articles so "col" is probably OK.

Apologies - I didn't look hard enough at Stephen's proposal. I agree we shouldn't be using such fragments as "rK" forms, at least at this stage.
9. A* 2022-08-24 00:45:26  Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
Whether or not we want to use search-only forms in this way, I don't think it's safe to do so as long as they're included with the other forms. Many sites/apps don't support the new tags yet. Some probably never will.
For the next generation of JMDict, I'd like to see search-only forms handled separately (i.e. in a different part of the XML). Then we can at least consider ideas like this.
And I agree with Marcus regarding the n-grams. The fact that both 前門の虎 and 後門の狼 have nearly identical counts suggests that they're almost always used together. Online search results appear to confirm this.

  Comments:
I'm not sure we should be using sK for things like this? Feels like we could be opening up a can of worms here. The reason the individual parts get more hits in the ngrams is frequently a problem with the searchability of the ngrams rather than real evidence the individual parts are frequent on their own.

Jim, there are 400 entries in jmnedict that contain "(Britain)". Could you change them all to "(UK)" with a bulk update?

They probably don't need to be. It's appropriate to add it for fictional places and objects but all characters will usually be fictional.
