Comments: | Jim, have you had any correspondence with jisho.org regarding support for sk/sK forms? It concerns me that the most popular JMdict dictionary website is currently showing them as though they're regular forms. |
|
11. | A* 2022-08-18 18:06:25 Opencooper
Comments: | Maybe should still be tagged [uk] for the downstream users who haven't yet/won't implement hiding of the search forms but still update the dictionary data? See for example Jisho currently: https://jisho.org/search/へこたれる. Otherwise, it makes the kanji seem common, negating the intent of the new tags. |

Comments: | I considered adding a separate adj-f sense but we've been moving away from that approach in recent years. 海洋 is not an adjective that can be put in front of any word; it's a noun that appears in a lot of compound terms, where it's translated variously as "marine", "oceanic", "oceanographic", "underwater", "nautical", "maritime", etc. I think it's better to just add these 海洋 compounds as entries. |

Once the new sk/sK approach gets settled down and more sites and apps are handling them, we should look again at the issue, as we'll have the option of adding, for example, ご協力 and 御協力 as [sK] forms to the 協力 entry. With a threshold like 10k hits, we'd end up including all sorts of rubbish that most people would very rarely (if ever) encounter. If text glossing considerations are the main sticking point here, then we should implement hidden kanji/reading fields. Users don't need to be shown オンナノコ. |

Comments: | I do see where Stephen is coming from. But ultimately I think this approach is the safest and most "correct". There's no ambiguity. And users don't have to infer that さいだん is rare; we've made it explicit. It won't always be obvious how often a kanji form is used for particular readings, but in clear-cut cases like this I think it makes sense to split. |
|

21. | A* 2022-08-16 01:45:54 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I think we can say with confidence that 仙人掌 is [rK] for シャボテン. サボテン is written overwhelmingly in kana. There's no reason to believe that シャボテン would be any different. > I think it's safer to think of [rK] as being strictly "for the entry" rather than also "for the readings." I don't think there's a meaningful distinction between "the entry" and the "the readings". Readings are words, and kanji are just a way of representing those words in writing. When an entry merges readings, it's really merging different words. To say that that a surface form is rK "for the entry" is to say that it's rK for the words the form corresponds to. In the case of 截断, it is not a rare surface form of the word さいだん. I agree that splitting out さいだん doesn't do much in the way of readability. I just wanted to explain that we're not too concerned about duplication of information. |

Comments: | Add this to the list of jisho.org quirks(well, probably not just them). I don't know how well the [fld] tags are supported by various consumers of jmdict, but there is a danger in relying on them entirely for disambiguation. Usually a missing [fld] tag would just remove a little information from the gloss, so I hope not to make a major issue over this, but for a kanji beginning with "手", "one's hand" is completely ambiguous. Besides jisho.org, weblio doesn't include the [fld] info either. https://ejje.weblio.jp/content/手札 JMdictでの「手札」の英訳 手札 読み方:てふだ (1) 文法情報 (名詞) 対訳 one's hand vs. 研究社 新和英中辞典での「手札」の英訳 てふだ 手札 〈トランプの〉 a hand I would love if the jisho.org team were open to help in fixing some of these things, but the website disclaims any interest in contributions, and things seem fairly fixed as they are... |
