Jim, have you had any correspondence with jisho.org regarding support for sk/sK forms? It concerns me that the most popular JMdict dictionary website is currently showing them as though they're regular forms.
11. A* 2022-08-18 18:06:25  Opencooper
  Comments:
Maybe should still be tagged [uk] for the downstream users who haven't yet/won't implement hiding of the search forms but still update the dictionary data? See for example Jisho currently: https://jisho.org/search/へこたれる. Otherwise, it makes the kanji seem common, negating the intent of the new tags.

Robin: "No, because 茫と is ぼうと, not ぼうっと."

Yes, I get that, but I feel that if we tag it rK, restrictions don't really matter that much because we're already signaling the kanji is barely used anyway.

I'll go ahead an make it a separate entry.

  Comments:
I see the EJs usually gloss "marine" as "海洋の". It's all a bit muddy. I guess my preference would be an adj-f sense but I'm not going to battle for it.
5. A* 2022-08-15 13:52:43  Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
I considered adding a separate adj-f sense but we've been moving away from that approach in recent years. 海洋 is not an adjective that can be put in front of any word; it's a noun that appears in a lot of compound terms, where it's translated variously as "marine", "oceanic", "oceanographic", "underwater", "nautical", "maritime", etc.
I think it's better to just add these 海洋 compounds as entries.

It seems to be very commonly used pre-nominally in compounds which are typically translated as "marine XXX". It would be good to get "marine" in there somewhere. A second marine/ocean(ic)/etc. sense?

I've been relaxed about including these ご/お/御 forms as they're useful for lookups and text-glossing. Once the new sk/sK approach gets settled down and more sites and apps are handling them, we should look again at the issue, as we'll have the option of adding, for example, ご協力 and 御協力 as [sK] forms to the 協力 entry. I'll close this for now but the issue should be revisited,

I don't think absolute values for variant forms are that meaningful when it comes to common words. With a threshold like 10k hits, we'd end up including all sorts of rubbish that most people would very rarely (if ever) encounter. If text glossing considerations are the main sticking point here, then we should implement hidden kanji/reading fields. Users don't need to be shown オンナノコ.

I do see where Stephen is coming from. But ultimately I think this approach is the safest and most "correct". There's no ambiguity. And users don't have to infer that さいだん is rare; we've made it explicit.
It won't always be obvious how often a kanji form is used for particular readings, but in clear-cut cases like this I think it makes sense to split.
23. A 2022-08-16 05:47:29  Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
We/I used to be more aggressive about mergers but we've backed off a bit to avoid having notes about subtle differences, etc. It's a case-by-case judgement.
22. A* 2022-08-16 04:10:29  Stephen Kraus <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
It seems to me like a risky precedent to be duplicating entries over these tiny details, but maybe it won't be a big deal. At any rate, thanks for taking the time to hear out my concerns.
21. A* 2022-08-16 01:45:54  Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
I think we can say with confidence that 仙人掌 is [rK] for シャボテン. サボテン is written overwhelmingly in kana. There's no reason to believe that シャボテン would be any different.

> I think it's safer to think of [rK] as being strictly "for the entry" rather than also "for the readings."
I don't think there's a meaningful distinction between "the entry" and the "the readings". Readings are words, and kanji are just a way of representing those words in writing. When an entry merges readings, it's really merging different words. To say that that a surface form is rK "for the entry" is to say that it's rK for the words the form corresponds to. In the case of 截断, it is not a rare surface form of the word さいだん.

I agree that splitting out さいだん doesn't do much in the way of readability. I just wanted to explain that we're not too concerned about duplication of information.
20. A* 2022-08-16 01:37:20  Stephen Kraus <...address hidden...>

Maybe the priority tags should be downgraded to [ichi2]?

Our sense [2] isn't in meikyo 1e, which has 言付ける and 託ける in one entry.

Meikyo 2e splits 言付ける and 託ける into separate entries and has our sense [2] in the entry for 託ける.

Oukoku has both kanji forms and both senses in one entry. Doesn't seem that it's archaic.

Add this to the list of jisho.org quirks(well, probably not just them). I don't know how well the [fld] tags are supported by various consumers of jmdict, but there is a danger in relying on them entirely for disambiguation.

Usually a missing [fld] tag would just remove a little information from the gloss, so I hope not to make a major issue over this, but for a kanji beginning with "手", "one's hand" is completely ambiguous.

Besides jisho.org, weblio doesn't include the [fld] info either.

I would love if the jisho.org team were open to help in fixing some of these things, but the website disclaims any interest in contributions, and things seem fairly fixed as they are...

While I think it would be good to be able to find it in a search, I agree this is really marginal, and won't be missed.

  Comments:
I think it should be dropped. It's not a 変換ミス but rather an attempt at writing kanji for はんめいき, a misreading of 黎明期. If you search はんめいき on Twitter, you can see people admitting to making this mistake.

I think Eve brings up a good point why we shouldn't be so liberal with including lots and lots of sK forms. Is it harmless? I would argue it's not.

According to the definition in the above references, there is no need to repay the principal during this period, only the interest. This seems to match the definition of an interest-only period in English as per https://www.thebalance.com/what-is-the-definition-of-the-interest-only-period-315681

Japanese sources are translating this as "nanomachine", but my spidey sense tells me this is probably wasei. See how this user translated nanobot as ナノマシン[1], and how what the Simple English Wikipedia calls nanobot, the Japanese wiki calls nanomachine[2].
