I wasn't able to find the general meaning corresponding to the original gloss "shade" (=shadow, darkness) in a dictionary, so the more specific meanings found in the electronic editions of 大辞泉, スーパー大辞林 seem more appropriate. The variant "セード" is often used by lighting manufacturers, e.g. https://takizumi-denki.com/publics/search/?search_word=セード https://www.edrdg.org/~jwb/cgi-bin/ngramlookup?sent=照明セード+照明シェード+照明シェイド It's also more common overall than シェイド: https://www.edrdg.org/~jwb/cgi-bin/ngramlookup?sent=シェード+セード+シェイド

1. [n]
▶ ocean
▶ sea

History:
6. A 2022-08-16 06:08:26  Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
I see the EJs usually gloss "marine" as "海洋の". It's all a bit muddy. I guess my preference would be an adj-f sense but I'm not going to battle for it.
5. A* 2022-08-15 13:52:43  Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
I considered adding a separate adj-f sense but we've been moving away from that approach in recent years. 海洋 is not an adjective that can be put in front of any word; it's a noun that appears in a lot of compound terms, where it's translated variously as "marine", "oceanic", "oceanographic", "underwater", "nautical", "maritime", etc.
I think it's better to just add these 海洋 compounds as entries.

It seems to be very commonly used pre-nominally in compounds which are typically translated as "marine XXX". It would be good to get "marine" in there somewhere. A second marine/ocean(ic)/etc. sense?

I've been relaxed about including these ご/お/御 forms as they're useful for lookups and text-glossing. Once the new sk/sK approach gets settled down and more sites and apps are handling them, we should look again at the issue, as we'll have the option of adding, for example, ご協力 and 御協力 as [sK] forms to the 協力 entry. The main WWW usage of that surface form appears to be in "隼人の校しゃ", and is heavily manga related.
I've also found it in some kids' writing which seems to back up Rene's comment.
We don't really have an agreed threshold for accepting/rejecting odd-ball surface forms. 327 as an n-gram count would be fine if 校舎 wasn't all that common itself, but in fact it's very common so 校しゃ is relatively close to being noise.
I guess on balance, given the manga context of its use, I'd keep it.

Komainu (狛犬), often called lion-dogs in English, are statue pairs of lion-like creatures either guarding the entrance or the honden, or inner shrine of many Japanese Shinto shrines

During the early Heian period (ninth century), the tradition changed and the two statues started to be different and be called differently. One had its mouth open and was called shishi (獅子, lit. 'lion') because, as before, it resembled that animal. The other had its mouth closed, looked rather like a dog, was called komainu, or "Goguryeo dog", and sometimes had a single horn on its head.[8] Gradually the animals returned to be identical, but for their mouths, and ended up being called both komainu.[8]
  Comments:
changed "dog" to "lion-dog", added x-ref to 唐獅子. Added (stone) for consistency, to the extent that [2] is focused on shrine statues.

This edit motivated by my edit of 唐獅子, which seems to generally translate as "Chinese lion".

sankoku has a circular reference between 獅子 and 唐獅子.

If we gloss the x-ref 狛犬 with the "dog" kanji as "lion-dog", surely 獅子 "lion" counterpart merits being at least a lion-dog as well. (if not a lion outright)

It seems possible to me that [2] is perhaps overly specific (or that we need [3]: Chinese guardian lion). The shinto stone lions are just one place that 獅子 appear in Japanese culture.

Numerous references indicate that:
1. shishi came first to temples
2. then we had shishi on the left, komainu on the right
3. shishi and komainu took on each other's characteristics until they were nearly indistinguishable, except that shishi is always on the left, with its mouth open, and the komainu appears to the right with mouth closed.
4. They are both just called komainu today. (which is why the 狛犬, confusingly, does not say "right-handed" stone lion-dog. It now covers both).

I do see where Stephen is coming from. But ultimately I think this approach is the safest and most "correct". There's no ambiguity. And users don't have to infer that さいだん is rare; we've made it explicit.
It won't always be obvious how often a kanji form is used for particular readings, but in clear-cut cases like this I think it makes sense to split.

I think we can say with confidence that 仙人掌 is [rK] for シャボテン. サボテン is written overwhelmingly in kana. There's no reason to believe that シャボテン would be any different.

> I think it's safer to think of [rK] as being strictly "for the entry" rather than also "for the readings."
I don't think there's a meaningful distinction between "the entry" and the "the readings". Readings are words, and kanji are just a way of representing those words in writing. When an entry merges readings, it's really merging different words. To say that that a surface form is rK "for the entry" is to say that it's rK for the words the form corresponds to. In the case of 截断, it is not a rare surface form of the word さいだん.

I agree that splitting out さいだん doesn't do much in the way of readability. I just wanted to explain that we're not too concerned about duplication of information.

It's late, I'm throwing in the towel for now (except for the xref and [rare]).

The xref makes no special note of being the "standard" way of executing a computer program. Perhaps it should. These are all terms I've now run across with regard to computer process scheduling:
実行可能(状態) "runnable(state)" (a process which can be scheduled on a cpu if a cpu is available)
実行中(状態) "running(state)" (a process currently being executed)
in turn, these are far-less-common variants:
走行可能
走行中

Wikipedia chose the uncommon variants in 2010 when the article was created. They should probably switch. But the fact remains that Japanese people aren't bothered by this usage, so one couldn't call it "incorrect".

Google image search:
実行可能状態 or 実行可能 = CPU scheduling diagrams
走行可能状態 or 走行可能 = vehicle speedometers

実行可能	152069	77.6%
走行可能	43996	22.4%

実行可能状態	2120	80.6%
走行可能状態	510	19.4% (and this is mostly for automobiles)

I still think this is quite uncommon as a verb as well. But anyway. When I've regained my senses after being derailed by this last-minute discovery, I may revisit some related terms.

https://dictionary.goo.ne.jp/word/走行/
daijs: operation of wheeled vehicles, biological mechanisms

sankoku knows quite well that 実行 is: 「コンピューターで」プログラムを働かせる
sankoku gives no similar definition for 走行. (It does give a defn. for a tape recorder 録音機:テープがまわること. Maybe if we go back to the "press play on tape" days there was a connection to software...)

wiktionary has a bunch of senses, but not "execute a program"
https://ja.wiktionary.org/wiki/走行

most 和英辞典 do not carry sense[2]
https://ejje.weblio.jp/content/走行

Search twitter for "プログラムが走行" (or を走行) and you'll get ~1 match per year (some of which definitely do not look like native translation). プログラムが実行 can be measured in hits-per-day.

For comparison:
プログラムが走らない	100	4.0%
プログラムが走る	403	16.0%
プログラムを走らせる	2021	80.1% (really needs a causative form)
  Comments:
I have removed sense [2] entirely. The correct term is 実行. It is in my opinion(after considerable searching) not even worth marking [rare] with an xref. It is not included in most 和英辞典, I don't see it in any Japanese dictionaries, I don't see it used prevalently on twitter or google books (like, 3 hits) or anywhere else.

This is not to say that no one in history has ever used (or mistranslated) it this way, since the gloss is "running". "programming" was an emerging thing with a lot of E->J translations and new coinages. But I can't find any evidence suggesting that this should be considered a useful gloss of this term(the likelihood of encountering it seems vanishingly low, and if it were encountered, the meaning would be self-evident anyway).

If you want to consider a more productive (mis-?)translation, we don't gloss 走る as "to execute a program", but it clearly is used this way, particularly in the causative form:
プログラムを走らせる	2021
(far more than 走行, anyway). I'm not suggesting that we should add this sense (though maybe?)

In fact, I could go on. I hate arguing with GG5. Always an uphill struggle. Let me add to this point that a *lot* of words that mean "to operate" or "to run" can be used to "run a program". The following are all more common than 走行, and don't carry a special sense for it(some senses to seem generic enough to apply, however):
プログラムを動作させる	2165
プログラムを動かせる	245
プログラムを働かせる	97
プログラムを作動させる	221
プログラムを稼働させる	112
プログラムを稼動させる	120
プログラムを機能させる	37
プログラムを発動させる	87
(this is not an exhaustive list, just the first page of run/process hits I grabbed)
This entry---> プログラムを走行さ	27
      ---> プログラムが走行	38

Which is to say, this doesn't seem particularly special in anyway, and I think that listing it with a special, dedicated sense for "running a program" does more harm than good, even as [rare].

Final note:
https://ejje.weblio.jp/content/走行
日英・英日専門用語辞書での「走行」の英訳 gives "job run" and "program run", with the following Japanese:
ジョブの走行	0	0.0%
compare to the correct term(which it is missing):
ジョブの実行	4012	100.0%
for "program run" it gives all three of these:
プログラムの走行	84	0.5%
プログラム走行	116	0.6%
プログラム実行	18390	98.9% <----- correct term
it leaves off this one:
プログラムの実行	41669 <---- even more of the correct term.

I think the intention was to forbid the はぐ reading for 折ぐ, but currently it is also forbidden for 剝ぐ, which means automated parsers using JMDict will assume that 剝ぐ must be read as へぐ.

AIUI 剥 and 剝 are essentially two variants of the same kanji and the はぐ reading is OK for both.

The entry for 剥がす/剝がす does not have an equivalent restriction, incidentally.

While the name Ibaraki (or “Ibaragi”, as locals tend to pronounce it) may not immediately scream “destination” to international travelers, this unsung prefecture is much more than a typical rural outlier.
  Comments:
I disagree, いばらき being pronounced いばらぎ is very common, should not be sk.

  Comments:
"crushed ice" is used in English to refer to the same concept (ice used for cocktails). That seems to be the origin.

There's a sporting event by the same name that is officially titled "crashed ice." Sounds like wordplay to me rather than the etymological origin of this term.

Japanese sources are translating this as "nanomachine", but my spidey sense tells me this is probably wasei. See how this user translated nanobot as ナノマシン[1], and how what the Simple English Wikipedia calls nanobot, the Japanese wiki calls nanomachine[2].

My first thought was that under the 2/3 merging arrangements this could go into 1387180, which has 仙人掌/cactus. But that's all tied up with the source of サボテン, so it's probably worth keeping this one on its own.

ナウシカア is a character in Homer's Odyssey, though.

There are several of these XX内親王 entries. The 内親王 means "imperial princess; royal princess". Will this work, or do we go for the "Princess Senshi" style?
