There don't seem to be many kokugos with this expression, but those that do have it (daijs, oukoku, nikk) don't say much more than 「他人の面倒をみる」. I just came across this usage and was confused by JMdict's definitions.

Quite odd. 狼牙 looks as though it's read ろうげ/ロウゲ as in your kotobank reference. The Wiki reference doesn't mention 狼牙; instead it gives the kanji for ミツモトソウ as 水元草. My IME suggests 三本草.
