It's a jis 212/213 kanji, which meant it couldn't be used widely before Unicode. Certainly a variant of 顛.

顚 is in my EPWING copies of meikyo and oukoku. They use a small,
strange bitmap image to display the kanji (and some other rarer kanji)
rather than a regular font encoding (which is why this entry was not
picked up by the automated process last year). I'd be curious to know
how the kanji is displayed in the printed versions (i.e. 顛 or 顚).

Where did 七顚八倒 come from? Is it needed?

I hadn't actually noticed that both kanji in 歎称 appear in the other forms.
This is an interesting case. It's a rare arrangement of non-rK kanji. I think we can stretch the definition of rK to include forms like this as it's still the use of kanji (as opposed to kana/okurigana) that makes the surface form rare.

I think given the low frequency of the compound itself the rK is appropriate.

I thought that since 歎 and 称 both appear in non-[rK] forms, 歎称 would not be considered [rK].
(This is probably trivial, but I want to make sure I'm understanding this correctly.)

I agree with Stephen that "editing; compiling" don't look right.
I don't think the x-ref is needed. Daijr and Koj don't even mention 著述. Also, 撰述 differs from 著述 in that it can't refer to the book itself.
