The cutest demonstration, as a minecraft boat is backed up, one player does the "beep beep beep" of a truck in reverse, and another echoes "オライ" "オライ" オライ" https://youtu.be/tFzctMMQBw4?t=237 Here's a less-cute, actual garbage truck: https://youtu.be/jwbcOtjlohw?t=417 6:57 timestamp: "オレーーオレーー ストップ!" 17 second clip, "お" is barely pronounced at all: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-OjGxQrg1kU Here's quick tutorial on how to back up a vehicle. Term used repeatedly throughout. Pretty sure that's not a long vowel https://www.youtube.com/shorts/PssT--EHwAQ |
|
Comments: | I was going to propose adding "オライ" as a visible form, hence all the research. But after looking at everything I think this is mostly a spoken phenomenon, and people shouldn't be encouraged to *write* it is this way. Nonetheless, I "*heard* オライ and wanted to see if it was here, and couldn't find it. You hear this all the time when a work truck or garbage truck is in reverse, and someone is guiding. I don't think there is usually a long "o" at the beginning in this rhythmic "オライ オライ オライ" context. (オライ is repeated so long as the driver should continue in reverse). I wouldn't mind オライ with a note, but we don't even do this on 雰囲気 (I might make a comment there...) I'd note, I don't think the "it's safe to continue backing up" form is [int]. |

Comments: | I've already asked this on GitHub but I'll repeat it here. Do we want to use the [cards] tag for names of card games considering that we don't use [sports] for names of sports? I don't really mind either way but if we do tag them, I don't think the parenthesised part should be left simply as "game", "Japanese game", etc. I think it looks odd without "card" or some other descriptor that indicates it's a card game. |

Comments: | I absolutely do not believe that it's used in anything other than a tongue-in-cheek manner. I'd say this is evidenced by the examples given here. In many (all?) of them, the people involved aren't even looking at the moon. One of the links below discusses use in dramas but 月が綺麗ですね is only mentioned in the context of the Soseki story. I'd be surprised if there are any uses of 月が綺麗ですね in fictional works that don't reference Soseki. It could be argued that 月が綺麗ですね is worth recording for the simple reason that it's a reasonably well-known expression. But I don't think it's correct to gloss it as "I love you". It would never be translated back into English that way. I wouldn't be so strongly opposed to this if we just dropped "I love you" as a gloss, making it clearer that it only has this meaning by way of implication because of the anecdote. |

Comments: | Obviously you realize that it's irrelevant what the "English-language internet is full of claims" about, and that what actually matters is if this is used in Japanese or not. Of course claiming that "(in general) Japanese say 'the moon is beautiful' instead of saying 'I love you'" is bullshit but it is demonstrably true that this phrasing is actually used in real life, online, and in works of fiction in Japan. Having an entry for it is not a commentary on the English-language claims nor the equivalent of us saying "this is how Japanese people confess their feelings", just like having an entry on 口にする isn't the same thing as saying "Japanese people don't actually use the verb 'eat', they instead say 'put things in your mouth'." One thing we can do to clarify this isn't the standard way of saying "I love you" in Japanese though is to tag this as [rare], which it obviously is compared to other ways of expressing the same thing. |

▶ atamahane ▶ [expl] house rule specifying that in the event of two or more players declaring a win from a discarded tile, the winner is the player closest (in turn order) to the player who discarded the tile |
5. | A 2022-07-25 20:28:29 Jim Breen <...address hidden...> | |

Comments: | I chose "optional rule" instead of "house rule" because I thought maybe the latter might be too jargony, but maybe I only made it more confusing. The option doesn't belong to the players at the time of payment; whether or not atamahane is in effect is decided before the game begins. So it wouldn't be correct to say that the rule allows the payer to do anything. The rule specifies to whom the payer must pay. There's only one payer (the player who discarded the tile). Maybe this is better? I think only one comma is needed here, but I'm doubting myself a little bit. |

Comments: | the previous gloss was an explanation, but not an explanatory gloss as we currently define them - if the word is an noun, the expl gloss should also be an noun. should it be "allowing payers" rather than "allowing the payer"? Can there be more than one payer? |
