Comments: | There is a good reason for having a form like サッサと available to text-glossing systems. It is very useful, if not vital, to be able to handle katakana forms a bit separately. I'm comfortable with サッサと ending up as a search-only/hidden form, because glossing software can still use it, but it's important that it be available. |
|
13. | A 2022-07-19 04:00:03 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
Comments: | Yes, esp. when it comes to hiragana vs katakana I think "90k in the ngrams" by itself is a meaningless statistic. Jisho, yomichan, wwwjdic can all find this entry fine without "サッサと" being explicitly included. |
|
12. | A 2022-07-19 00:06:43 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I don't think it matters so much when it's simply hiragana vs. katakana. Most clients handle the conversion themselves. I have no objection to keeping it for now but I agree with Marcus that it should be a hidden form. アリガトウ gets a massive 230475 n-grams but we (rightly) don't include it as a reading. Once hidden forms are implemented, I see no reason not to use percentage-based thresholds (allowing for exceptions here and there). |

Comments: | Certainly the script reformers who (briefly) held sway in Japan in the late 1940s intended that the 1,850 kanji should be eventually reduced, and this was probably behind their use of 当用 with its "necessary for the current time" nuance. In fact, that meaning of the term never took hold and by the 1950s it was being described as "general use", etc. (e.g. Sakade, 1959) I don't think it's appropriate, over half a century later, to try and retrofit historical and political perspectives into a simple dictionary gloss. The history of script reform in Japan is an interesting one. For people following this thread I recommend: Christopher Seeley: A History of Writing in Japan (2000) Nanette Gottlieb: Kanji Politics (1995) Jim Unger: Literacy and Script Reform in Occupation Japan (1996) |

Comments: | Re: Chinese characters for interim use Please reconsider whether the "usual description" is actually faithful to the historical intention of the term. "Under the Allied Occupation, measures were introduced to limit to 1850 the number of Sino-Japanese characters (kanji) to be used in official documents and newspapers and to be taught in the nine years of compulsory education. These were called Tōyō kanji (Characters for Interim Use); the inference behind the term being that this was to be a first step towards further reduction in the number of kanji and possibly the eventual adoption of a phonetic script for Japanese. 20 Footnote 20: Seeley translates the term as 'characters for current use', but endorses the interpretation given here (2000: 158)." |

Comments: | The Japanese is actually an idiom rather than a proverb (my bad). Not sure the "give sb an inch" can be worked into an idiom? "to give someone an inch and have a wole yard taken"? it's a little awkward. |

|
Comments: | Alternate suggestion, single gloss only: give someone an inch and they'll take a mile ========= Long winded reasoning Before adding a new entry for a variant of this Japanese idiom, I'd like to add to the discussion on the current glosses, and see if something different might be considered. Google N-gram Corpus Counts 庇を貸して母屋 1530 軒を貸して母屋 908 NEW Adding to Stephen's comment, I have also have never heard the "ell" formation (though it's fair to say I'm not well versed in literature). Kids these days I guess... (I'm 42). I also immediately though "wouldn't mile be better than yard?" Obviously all of these formulations, and a number of variants (give 'em an inch, give them an inch, give someone an inch) are all in circulation(with "ell" appearing to be the origin) Currently, Cambridge Dictionary online has a single, modern / gender-neutral formulation: - give someone an inch and they'll take a mile No mention of yards or ells. If it were me, I would just use this gloss alone. I think it's likely to be readily understood by native English speakers, and safe to use for Japanese learners who acquire it via jmdict (I would not necessarily say the same of the "inch/ell" formulation). ===== Just looking at cute quotations and comic images, if you do a google image search for just the quoted prefix, you get the following rough counts for "miles", "yards", "foot", "ells", and "furlongs"(hah)... As you move toward gender neutrality (~modern usage), miles seems to gain in popularity. "give someone an inch" 17 miles, 1 yard, 0 ells "give them an inch" 12 miles, 2 yards, 0 ells "give em an inch". 6 miles, 2 x "foot", 1 furlong, 0 ells "give him an inch" 3 miles, 5 yards, 2 ells (there were a bunch of additional t-shirts with the "yard" expression) Also anecdotally, a twitter search for "give someone an inch" seems to be entirely "miles" (though other formulations sometimes yield different results) |
