Comments: | Robin: "No, because 茫と is ぼうと, not ぼうっと." Yes, I get that, but I feel that if we tag it rK, restrictions don't really matter that much because we're already signaling the kanji is barely used anyway. I'll go ahead an make it a separate entry. |

Comments: | I do see where Stephen is coming from. But ultimately I think this approach is the safest and most "correct". There's no ambiguity. And users don't have to infer that さいだん is rare; we've made it explicit. It won't always be obvious how often a kanji form is used for particular readings, but in clear-cut cases like this I think it makes sense to split. |
|
23. | A 2022-08-16 05:47:29 Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
Comments: | We/I used to be more aggressive about mergers but we've backed off a bit to avoid having notes about subtle differences, etc. It's a case-by-case judgement. |

Comments: | It seems to me like a risky precedent to be duplicating entries over these tiny details, but maybe it won't be a big deal. At any rate, thanks for taking the time to hear out my concerns. |

21. | A* 2022-08-16 01:45:54 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I think we can say with confidence that 仙人掌 is [rK] for シャボテン. サボテン is written overwhelmingly in kana. There's no reason to believe that シャボテン would be any different. > I think it's safer to think of [rK] as being strictly "for the entry" rather than also "for the readings." I don't think there's a meaningful distinction between "the entry" and the "the readings". Readings are words, and kanji are just a way of representing those words in writing. When an entry merges readings, it's really merging different words. To say that that a surface form is rK "for the entry" is to say that it's rK for the words the form corresponds to. In the case of 截断, it is not a rare surface form of the word さいだん. I agree that splitting out さいだん doesn't do much in the way of readability. I just wanted to explain that we're not too concerned about duplication of information. |

|
Comments: | Some 脇芽 at least are also commonly called "suckers" in the case of tomatoes. 脇 may be doing double-duty here. With the meaning "side" it could be any lateral offshoot from the main stem. Given the "armpit", it rather plainly matches the definition of "sucker" which is a small offshoot that sprouts at the joint of a larger offshoot. (pictures make clear). The is another term that wordreference as for "sucker", which is 吸枝. This actually seems like a rather uncommon translation by comparison. |

Comments: | Usually plural in english in common use. Could make singular, but that would look odd. This term is far more common-looking than in Japanese than [bot] or the previous glosses would suggest. Anyone growing tomatoes or vegetables at home might be familiar with this. I'm not sure [bot] is even required here. There is some overlap with broccolini (thin broccoli shoots).わき芽型 |
