Comments: | If it's not ateji, it's gikun. It can't be neither. I wasn't proposing that we delete this entry. By adding サンフランシスコ to 桑港/そうこう, we could drop any mention of 桑港 from this entry. 桑港 is more or less obsolete, no matter how it's read. |
|
6. | A* 2022-07-10 04:33:51 Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I don't think it's an ateji (桑港 derived from 桑方西斯哥 + 港) and I don't think it's a gikun reading either. I really think it was best the way it was as two entries. |

5. | A* 2022-06-30 20:14:11 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>

I suggest dropping よよ from here, adding 代々 to 2843316 (世々/よよ), and splitting out せいせい/せぜ/せせ from 世々/よよ into a separate entry (or multiple separate entries). This always seems to get translated as "reactionary decline", but that's unattested in my view; I've seen it used a lot, but only ever on .jp websites. The way I translate it depends on the situation and space constraints (it usually appears in ghastly powerpoint presentations). I usually go with "relative to last year's..." "comedown from..." etc., but I can never find a way to convey it in the equivalent brevity. |

7. | D 2022-07-14 03:30:54 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I 100% agree with your assessment of トリガー法, that it's probably translated on the fly in many cases (though this changes the more it gets referenced of course), that it's used in a very limited (and recent) context. But: 1) The fact that it might be perfectly obvious to any Japanese news editor or US-based journalist that "trigger law" would most naturally be translated to トリガー法 rather than トリガーロー or say 引き金法律, it won't at all obvious to plenty of JSL learners. 2) Even if the context is recent and limited, it's a word anybody reading English-language news will be aware of. It's not a single law it's referring to either. 3) again, it seems likely to me this is the kind of word users might search for. I think it makes sense to to err on the side of inclusion here. That said I guess it's possible "trigger laws" are largely irrelevant now that Roe v Wade has actually been overturned. (OTOH they might become relevant again as one judge of the Supreme Court has flagged more cases might end up overturned) |
|
6. | D* 2022-07-14 01:40:22 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I think we need more than that to justify its inclusion. "Trigger law" is used almost exclusively in the context of US abortion laws. Pre-2022 online results for "トリガー法" are virtually non-existent. It's a direct translation, probably done on the fly in most cases. I don't think it's appropriate for a JE dictionary. |
|
5. | D* 2022-07-11 00:13:36 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
Comments: | OTOH people use jisho etc. for reverse look-ups all the time, and this is certainly the kind of thing an American wanting to explain something like this might look up. Or an E-J translator. It won't be 100% obvious to everyone that "trigger law" would be translated as "トリガー法" rather than "トリガーロー". |

3. | A* 2022-07-10 19:23:50 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
