Comments: | but "Korean" plays the same role in "Korean person" as in "Korean national" - if it can refer to both Koreas in "... person", can't it in "... national" too? I feel the citizenship part is very important. This is often the only way these people really are Korean - by citizenship. Linguistically, culturally, they're often entirely Japanese. Some are not even fully ethnically Korean but half-Japanese but still "Zainichi Korean" by virtue of their passport. |

Refs: | daij have the first two senses, but I think there's a third, which I think daijs' example for its sense 2 is actually an example of: "2 あるものの、成立・存在の根本となる条件。「人命尊重が大前提だ」" in English, you can't really translate this as "respect for human life is an important condition". An important condition for what? Daijs specifies that this "成立・存在の根本となる条件" is specifically for "あるもの" so I don't think you can really leave that part out. Same thing with the usage here: https://www.facebook.com/ppkyoto/posts/937243033133944 picture from a sign in a temple garden reading: "苔もいきものです。大事にしましょう", with a caption by the person posting the photo: "これが大前提です。" Another example: https://twitter.com/into__the_void/status/1065167741756297217 "落書きはいけません…という大前提はあったとしても、描かれた場所と内容によっては特別な意味を持ってしまうものもある。" The meaning is an even more generalized version of sense 2, which in itself is probably a more generalized version of sense 3. |

▶ miscellaneous school ▶ [expl] legal category of schools including certain vocational schools, driving schools, cram schools, etc. |
5. | A 2022-06-20 11:47:53 Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I guess that gets around the problem that "miscellaneous school" is rather meaningless as an English gloss. |
|
4. | A* 2022-06-20 10:58:51 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
Refs: | but the definition for this is something that's neither a regular school nor a vocational school: 学校教育法第一条に定める学校(小学校・中学校・高等学校など)および専修学校以外のもので (daijr) a driving school is a 各種学校, some cramming schools are too, but you wouldn't refer to either as a vocational school. "miscellaneous school" is maybe a little impenetrable but "vocational school" is wrong, esp. as the first gloss |

I just got the following: ダブルワーク - 216 ダブルワークの - 179 ダブルワークを - 140 ダブルワークに - 168 ダブルワークして - 175 Clearly inconsistent - if the last 4 are true, the first has to be > 600. Comments: | Glossing systems tend to go for the longest match, and since there are thousands of gloss requests each day I don't want to send them to the wrong entries. That said, I see I have glossing problems with other XXカラー terms, e.g. ブラックカラー is bringing up the "black calla" lily. Since I have to do some XXカラー fixes I may as well handle ピンクカラー at the same time. |
|
5. | A* 2022-06-20 14:03:37 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
Comments: | But how likely is it someone would actually look up the meaning of the two words ピンクカラー together when looking at them in a context when it's a reference to pink color rather than pink collar? I have a hard time imagining an actual scenario where having this entry ends up helping anyone. |
|
4. | A* 2022-06-20 07:46:21 Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I certainly don't think we need entries for レッドカラー, オレンジカラー, etc. as they are quite unambiguous. ピンクカラー is an exception, thanks to the カラー being in three different entries. I think we owe it to users not to give a single quite misleading gloss if they look up the katakana I quoted. |
|
3. | A* 2022-06-20 05:55:25 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
