Refs: | I don't think that ultra-concise definitions which only technically capture the nuances of a word's usages are going to be the most useful. I know it's not this project's responsibility to be an English dictionary, but there really are lots of students and translators out there who get this one wrong all the time. It's not our fault that they don't think harder about the context in which words are used, but why not nudge them in the right direction? The way in which the word is used in Japanese often wouldn't be considered idiomatic in English, and I don't think it would hurt to draw some attention to that. for example see: https://twitter.com/DarkSoul4242/status/1502535763527086080 |

Comments: | I don't know enough about linguistics to have a strong opinion about it. Since most of the kokugos split the senses, I just assumed they had some good reason for it. I do think this entry could use more detail than it did before, though. It could be because I'm a bit of a dimwit, but the meaning didn't click with me until I checked with the kokugos, which provide some examples (「書く」の「か」, etc) |

I'm not seeing a strong case for オウム being read 唵 - it's not in any of the kokugos and I don't think the 新英和大辞典 is necessarily saying it's read that way either? koj and daijr mention its used in mikkyo. It's a little weird to suggest that 唵[おん] is used by Hinduists when that's most likely not the case - even in Japanese, I'd assume they say オウム rather than おん. but I'm speculating. unclear if uk or not. |

Comments: | The explanation in Daijisen begins: "《〈梵〉oṃの音写》インドの宗教や哲学で、神聖で神秘的な意味をもつとされる語。" before going on to the "仏教でも...". It's primarily used in Hindu and related contexts, and from there it leaked into Tibetan Buddhism. I don't think it's primarily a Buddhist term which is why I dropped the tag. 唵 is really an ateji, assigned to the syllable in China because it sort-of matched the sound. Its precise readings in Japanese, where it's a very rare kanji, are not that relevant to this word. |

Comments: | the kyowa page: "1966年(昭和41年) 商標登録" Daijr also mentions its a trademark: "商標名。" I agree it has probably been genericized, which is likely why it's in Daijr in the first place. |

4. | A* 2022-05-04 23:56:58 Stephen Kraus <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | Didn't mean to suggest that the gloss had any sort of explanatory power. It seems I just misunderstood the purpose of the [tm] gloss type. Is there any evidence that ビニタイ is a specific trademark and not just a generic term used for the ties? The kyowa webpage has ビニタイ listed alongside other generic terms like ゴムバンド. ビニールタイ gets some n-gram hits, and a web image search brings up the same products as ビニタイ. My guess would be that the viny-as-in-vine story is a false etymology invented by the company to add flair to their brand. Judging by the search results on amazon, ビニタイ looks like a generic term and viny-ties seems to be one particular brand. Google N-gram Corpus Counts 780 100.0% ビニールタイ None - ビニール・タイ |

Comments: | The original word is not "vinyl tie" but viny-tie(s) per the kyowa page (they are the trademark holder). The intended meaning of "viny" here is apparently 植物のツル (vine) - it's not a reference to "vinyl". I don't think a single English-language page using "viny-tie" is reason enough to include it as a gloss. |

Comments: | I've had a chance to dig into the NHK accent dictionary, and it confirms the ふたさら pronunciation and also the さんさら/みさら situation with 三皿. I'll approve this temporarily to shorten the ques but leave it here as a reminder. It would be good to get a long-term solution to the issue of the readings of numerics+counters. |

Comments: | I personally don't have anything to send. The dictionary has been published in an app for iPhone and Android, and there's a user on reddit who seems to have been able to pull all of the pitch accent data from it (although the counter forms don't appear to be included). So there must be some way to extract the data. |
