As a matter of policy, we don't tag things "wasei" if they're not Japanese constructions, no matter how much the meaning might differ from the original English expression.

It can stay as in Stephen's note, or the wasei tag could go and "dead ball" be added as a second gloss. I have seen other cases of rather stretched wasei tagging by kokugos.

Daijr/s, koj, shinmeikai, oukoku, and meikyo all label this word as 和製, and most of them note that its Japanese usage corresponds to the phrase "hit by a pitch" in English. Nikkoku also contains this note, but does not label the word as 和製. Iwakoku does not label it 和製, but rather 日本独特の用法.

I think the 和製 claim is questionable. Its meaning in Japanese merely seems to be restricted to a narrow subset of its meanings in English. When a player is hit by a pitch, a Japanese announcer would likely describe the situation as a デッドボール, while an American announcer would probably say "hit by pitch." But if you were to ask the American announcer whether the ball that hit the player is dead or not, they would absolutely agree that it is. (Wikipedia lists hit-by-pitch as its first example of a dead ball: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_ball#Baseball)

Nikkoku gives an example of 死球 in this sense from 1896, and an example of デッド‐ボール from 1934. Google's "Books Ngram Viewer" shows that "dead ball" became common in written English starting in the 1860s. Japanese Wikipedia says baseball was only introduced to Japan in 1871 (https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/野球の歴史#日本における野球の歴史).

I don't know if I'm in any position to question six major kokugo dictionaries, but I thought I'd at least leave a note. To me it seems like they think it's 和製 simply because its situational usage in Japanese differs slightly from English. If that's sufficient, I'd think just about every loanword would be 和製.

BTW, re the 2017 comment: `For うかがえる JMdict says "See: 伺う,..."', Actually JMdict never said that, it's a function in WWWJDIC that tries to point users towards possibly useful entries when they look up an inflected form. I've updated the file so that the うかが* batch now points to both 伺う and 窺う.

  Comments:
From the quoted references, it would appear 'to go' (or even 'to come') is a more apt translation than 'to visit'. In almost all examples in both sources, translating in to 'go' seems to make more sense. For example, in the former reference, the following example is given: 「...お決まりになりましたら、お伺いいたします。」Clearly the waitress in this example is saying 'Once you've decided your order, I'll come back.' rather than 'I'll visit you again.' In fact, these sources even liken 伺う to 参る (and 行く), which means 'come/go' (the only difference being 謙譲語I and 謙譲語II).

Daijr has 捕る in with 取る, along with others.
GG5 has a main 取る entry, and another combining 取る/穫る/獲る.
Based on this, I think the "iK" can come off this one.
Also, the 魚を捕る entry probably can be extended by 魚を取る (13M hits) , 魚を獲る, 魚を穫る, etc. all of which get significant hits. See 1878480.

Those とれる redirections are (deliberately) only to verbs with the reading of とる. The verbs which are natively read とれる are not included, as their entries are displayed anyway.
Those "しなかった (etc.) See: 為る" pseudo-entries are there purely to help beginners decode inflections which may otherwise be a bit mystifying. They are not intended to include plain dictionary forms of verbs.
I am afraid you've lost me with "Empty vessels", etc. You'll need to raise those topics under the relevent entries.
2. A* 2013-02-05 19:32:36  Francis
  Refs:
See below.
  Comments:
No change to the above. The link for "とれる" redirects to a range of entries, but it does not redirect to the above. In addition, in order to save another submission, I can perhaps state here that it does not redirect to "録れる 【とれる】 (v1) (1) to be recorded (sound, etc.); (2) to be able to record " either.

What I am suggesting is that the redirection perhaps should include the additions as follows:-

とれる (etc.) See: 採る 撮る 執る 取る 捕る 獲れる 穫れる 録れる

The entry for "取れる" does contain a redirection so 2 of the kanji are clearly compatible in that respect, see:-

取れる 【とれる】 (v1,vi,vt) (1) to come off; to be removed; (2) (of pain, a fever, etc.) to disappear; (3) (See 獲れる・1, 捕れる .1)

P.S.

I take your point about footpaths and the English meanings. That is one of the problems of living in England and thinking that English is "English".

However, I'm not quite so convinced about the "Empty vessels" and the mouse and the rat. Furthermore, the "よくしゃべる者はかえって実行しない" does not seem to fit. This may mean - if I have got it right - that a person who talks well, on the contrary will not perform [carry something out]. Which is not quite the cat's meow alerts the mouse to danger and therefore allows the escape; nor is it quite the empty vessel. Anyway, it is obviously quite difficult to get matches that suit everyone's thinking and in a dictionary it is the majority view that counts.

I'm not seeing "維持する" captured in these glosses. But without contemporary examples to refer to, I wouldn't feel confident suggesting alternatives. This is one of the reasons I'd rather we didn't add archaic words simply because they appear in a dictionary. A lot of our glosses probably aren't very good. I think our criteria for inclusion should be stricter for archaic terms.
