Comments: | I very much doubt that this entry in its current state could cause offence and/or confusion. There are only two senses, and this is the preferred term when referring to milking of an animal. It would look odd leading with "breast pumping". |
|
7. | A* 2022-04-05 13:30:21
Comments: | Normally you order senses based on how common they are, correct? Doing it the other way here without a good reason risks alienating/offending users who happen upon the word as it is most commonly used. suddenly seeing "milking a cow or goat" in the context of human breastfeeding can offend people, but the opposite wouldn't. |
|
6. | A 2022-04-05 07:38:05 Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I'd leave it as-is. It's not really a distinct sense in that breast pumping is another form of milking. They could be merged. |

Comments: | I'm uncomfortable with this edit as I feel it's rather too focused on the specific situation with mahjong, where a chow (which I regard as a type of meld) is not a "win condition". Unless we were to create a mahjong-specific sense, I'd rather the sense was left the way it was, with "meld" still there as a gloss. After all the term is used in other games too. |

He trapped Conn in a corner and pummeled him ferociously for thirty seconds. [VERB noun] https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/pummel pummel verb pum·mel ˈpə-məl : POUND, BEAT |
|
Comments: | I came here to suggest "pummel" (below). Then I googled and saw a bunch of baseball players, and realized that "belt hit after hit" was probably a baseball reference, then I saw this vaccine thing and got incredibly confused: 「ワクチンを打って打って打ちまくるしかない」 2022.1.18 NHK https://twitter.com/KDystopia/status/1485704549478572032 All googlable. Not massively common or anything, but easily understandable by a Japanese person. "ワクチン" is also *optional* in context. "ワクチンを打ちまくる" "ワクチンを打って打って打ちまくるしかない" "ワクチンを打ちまくれ" At the end I finally get that 捲る is a generic suffix. 打ちまくる isn't even *in* sankoku, in any form. But 捲る[2] is. This applies to *all* senses of 打つ. I see we have a bunch if ~捲る entries. Often times we do not gloss entries that are compounds like this. Obviously it's helpful to provide more nuanced English glosses(like "pummel"), but there is also a certain argument for deleting this term entirely to fall back on 打ち + 捲る glosses, since 打つ has *so many* potential senses. Otherwise, it seems like the proper thing to do is split this into a bunch of senses... The problem is that having this entry here, limited to the hitting sense, masks the fact that 打ちまくる just means to 打つ repeatedly, whatever 打つ might mean. We might be mislead to think the Japanese are aggressively pounding away at vaccines. ================ Entirely limited to "pummel"(I wrote all of this first): Am I crazy? I feel like we have a word for "to hit repeatedly" and "to belt hit after hit" and "to unleash a barrage of blows". But I can't find much J->E support for it anywhere. Should we share this with the world? I encountered 撃ちまくる, with the other kanji. But even that one could have used "pummel" I think. Fighter calling on his mage companions to finish off a dragon by blasting it with magic. "今だ。撃ちまくれ!" "Ok, shoot it now!" or "Now! Fire!" |

9. | A* 2022-08-24 00:45:26 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
Comments: | Whether or not we want to use search-only forms in this way, I don't think it's safe to do so as long as they're included with the other forms. Many sites/apps don't support the new tags yet. Some probably never will. For the next generation of JMDict, I'd like to see search-only forms handled separately (i.e. in a different part of the XML). Then we can at least consider ideas like this. And I agree with Marcus regarding the n-grams. The fact that both 前門の虎 and 後門の狼 have nearly identical counts suggests that they're almost always used together. Online search results appear to confirm this. |

Comments: | I'm not sure we should be using sK for things like this? Feels like we could be opening up a can of worms here. The reason the individual parts get more hits in the ngrams is frequently a problem with the searchability of the ngrams rather than real evidence the individual parts are frequent on their own. |

Comments: | We have about 260 entries with mahjong tags, and many of those have n-gram counts in the low 100s. I think a cut-off of about 200 in the n-grams is appropriate, provided it doesn't mean a huge influx. I think an xref to the リーチ entry is more appropriate. I'll close this and reopen for exposure/comment. |
