Refs: | https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/白兵戦 |
|
Comments: | Small update to avoid some confusion. At first glance, the term "hand-to-hand combat" makes it seem like 白兵戦 is only done with physical "hands", as though weapons are excluded, which is definitely not the case according to definitions in wikipedia, daijisen, etc. I thought the translation was a mistake, but on further inspection, I now realize hand-to-hand combat actually can involve weapons. For example, from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hand-to-hand_combat, >The phrase "hand-to-hand" may include use of melee weapons such as knives, swords, clubs, spears, axes, or improvised weapons such as entrenching tools. I assume this is why the term was chosen, but to help with some of the confusion, I think it'd be good if close combat/close-quarters combat was also included. The wiki entry for 白兵戦 directly references these English terms, so I think they're a good fit. |
