Comments: | The case for revisiting this one is not strong: - in usage 許す dominates - the JE dictionaries only have 許す for ゆるす. GG5 has it for all its 7 senses - the major kokugos combine all three kanji forms in single entries. Daijirin adds tags such as 《許・赦》 and 《許・聴》 to some of the senses but 許 is used for all senses. We could add notes such as "occ. 赦す" to some entries, but given the low level of usage of the other two forms, is it worth it? |

|
Comments: | I was told by a Japanese NS that there was a significant difference between 許す, which has a sense of 許可する and 赦す, which has a the sense of 恩赦する, and your kanji dictionary supports that assertion. I wonder if this would not warrant creating separate entries for 許す and 赦す... Likewise, 聴す seems to be totally different from the above two... maybe this entry could be revisted? |

Comments: | I think one of the strengths of JMdict/EDICT is its coverage of non-standard and erroneous forms. If they are "out there" in sufficient numbers, as in this case with over 3k in the n-grams, it's worth keeping them. It really helps text-glossing systems, and it's of benefit to users, especially learners. If an app builder doesn't want to show them, they are free to leave them out - that's their choice. |

Comments: | Without definite thresholds, there's no obvious way to choose between spec1 and spec2. I don't think it needs to be case-by-case unless A) the term is too recent for the ngrams, or B) a common term and an obscure term share the same kanji form and we want to give priority to the former (to aid lookups). Any figure is arbitrary but does 500k+ for spec2 and 1m+ for spec1 sound sensible? |

8. | A* 2022-12-10 05:18:40 Jim Breen <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | The spec1/spec2 pre-dated the m-grams by many years. They started out as tags that indicated they were entries in a certain compact dictionary and hence likely to be reasonably common. I was criticized by the compiler of the dictionary, so I flipped the tags to just "spec". Since then they've become a general "common term" tag. We could pick on, say, 500k+ for the aggregation of n-gram counts as a guideline, but I think it should be a case-by-case decision. |

Comments: | Robin, I've mentioned this previously but the version of Nikkoku that was available on yahoo pre 201X was a completely different beast from the abridged version on kotobank today. It certainly doesn't matter all that much in a rare entry that we might not have even bothered adding in the first place today but I must confess it irks me when you remove things I've added with a "I don't know where it came from" when the original submission cites Nikk, and was approved by another editor who at the time would have had access to the same edition. |
