But I wonder if it would be better to amend our policy on place names. I don't think state capitals are especially important for a JE dictionary (unless they're major cities). |

(this falls under "other significant cities" though and should still be reinstated, I think) Some of the state capitals might be a little obscure in terms of international importance but I don't have any issues with how the policy is currently worded and we're only looking at a total of 50 entries in total anyway. |

I could be wrong. :-) But I first came across the word in the review of an Italian restaurant, and I find other stuff on the Web like イタリアから取り寄せたこだわりの原料をふんだんに使ったドルチェです。 It's not obvious that its use is restricted from the fact that it's a loan from Italian (ランドセル is not associated with Dutch contexts). |

Refs: | Some English dictionaries (Wiktionary, Oxford Advanced Learner's) don't even have an entry for "dolce". Webster has only this very brief definition: "soft, smooth — used as a direction in music" . So -- what to make of this sentence: 女性の方に人気なのがバラエティ豊かなドルチェの数々です。 (from a restaurant review) . I wasn't aware that dolce can mean "dessert" in Italian, and it turns out that it can mean that in Japanese too. Here is Wiktionary's Italian-English entry: ADJECTIVE: sweet; gentle, mild; luscious, sooth [sic: presumably "smooth"]; dear; (phonetic) soft NOUN: sweetness; dessert; cake . That's quite a few different senses. Which are used in Japanese? Here's what the Wikipedia article says: ドルチェ(dolce)は、イタリア語で甘い、甘美な、優しい、柔らかいの意味である。また英語の「スイーツ」や日本語「甘味」と同様に甘いもの全般、デザートの意味もあ る。... 演奏記号の一つ。ほぼ原義通り「甘美に」を意味する。 http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/ドルチェ . So it seems that most of the Italian senses don't apply to the Japanese word, except in the musical context, but "sweets; dessert; cake" does. As a musical direction, "dolce" is usually defined as an adverb (softly, sweetly, gently, delicately) in English, even though it's an adjective in Italian (the adverb being "dolcemente", apparently). |

Comments: | I guess it's "only" the passive voice of 流す, and we could cover it by adding "to overwhelm" to sense 3 here. I do rather like GG5's entry for 流される and since it's quite common it may be best to add it as an entry here. I'll propose a new entry and close this. |

10. | A* 2024-04-13 05:37:09 Marcus Aseth <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | kenkyuusha has an entry for 流される with "overwhelmed" as one of its meanings, one of the example sentences in there: "感情に流される be overwhelmed by ┏(an) emotion [(a) feeling];" Should that meaning be added to 流す or 流される should have its own entry for that meaning? |

Comments: | On further thought, I'm removing [sK] from 谷まる in favor of [rK]. It is "correct', and this form *does* appear in yourei, even in recent works. You can even find the off appearance in wikipedia. There is another recently added entry "進退これ谷まる". If we [sK] 谷 here, it will looks very strange for it to appear there. And if we go strictly off of statistics, there's an argument to [sK] 谷 out of the きわまる entry itself. Note: for statistical purposes, only 窮 and 谷 are actually considered analogous by Japanese people, so their relative statistics should probably not consider the more-common 極, which throws off a lot of numbers. |

Comments: | no dictionary entries for 窮, and yourei and google news are exclusively 進退窮, so I'm adding 極 as [sK], even though the statistics might otherwise be high enough to display it. 極 is well-represented on twitter though, so definitely worth at least the [sK]. sankoku suggests that 谷 and 窮 are "technically" interchangeable, but doesn't have a dedicated entry for this expression. |

Comments: | My view is that an acronym is only an abbreviation in the language it derives from. Oxford tags "NASA" as an abbreviation but not "FIFA" (Fédération Internationale de Football Association). "VSOP" is not an abbreviated form of 超長距離干渉計. I can see an argument for tagging sense 2 as abbr, as it's a Japanese-made acronym of a Japanese word. Daijr doesn't describe "CD", "DVD", etc. as abbreviations but does define "JK" as "女子高生の略". |
