Comments: | I've never come across it either, only surmised it might exist and it turns out it does. I don't think having it detracts anything from the entry. I know that forefather is applied to ancestors of both genders but opposition to an obviously masculine gendered word covering everyone is why we now also have so many woman-specific or non-gendered words like "ombudswoman" and "ombudsperson", and this. I don't think throwing people who deeply care about these kind of things a bone is a bad thing, at least not when there's clear evidence the word is already accepted by other dictionaries. |

Comments: | I thought about adding "sense of urgency" , but I think that's really stretching it. 緊張 is about tension, not urgency. Something being urgent may lead to tension, but that doesn't make it part of the set of meanings. |
|
6. | A* 2021-09-29 15:30:28 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
Comments: | Thank you for taking the time to argue your case, it is appreciated, as are your contributions to the project (something we're not always very good at making clear). The "best answer" in the hinativethread you linked to was in full: "Suppose you are a figure skater and about to do your performance. If you get too nervous, you cannot move smoothly and won't get a good result. That's how we say as 緊張. However, to concentrate on your performance with a sense of tension is important for a good result. That sense of tension is 良い緊張感, or we often say 良い意味での緊張感." The (apparently bilingual) person is still chosing to call this "positive" feeling a "sense of tension" in English. When I suggested I could imagine a US sportsman talk about a "good kind of nervousness", this is what I was referring to. I think the usage is basically the same in English. I disagree with your assessment that the current glosses fail to capture the meaning of いい意味での緊張感. I think "nervousness/sense of tension, in a positive sense" captures that usage quite well so I don't really see the need for additional glosses, let alone a separate sense. There's always room for improvement though and we might be able to refine sense 1. "sense of urgency" maybe fits in there, but I'm not really sure, the connotations of it feel slightly different to me. I'll let somebody else weigh in on that. |
|
5. | A* 2021-09-29 14:37:39 Jacob Albano <...address hidden...>
Comments: | Marcus: 良い緊張感 is not a phrase in and of itself. 良い is being used here to *specify* "the good kind of 緊張感"; they go on to say 良い意味での緊張感 which is obviously a complete descriptive phrase. My comments on 緊張感がない are relevant here as well. Jim: It seemed more helpful to me to add a new sense rather than adding the (positive) meanings from my suggestion into the (negative) sense we already have. 緊張感 is very much akin to テンション, in both its literal meaning and also the way it can be either positive or negative based on context; we have two separate senses for テンション that capture this. At the very least, this 良い意味での緊張感 is not captured at all by the existing sense for 緊張感. |

Comments: | Jim: Fair enough indeed, I generally don't like thesauruses too much myself but I'm finding it difficult to source this phrase formally and felt that it would be my best option. Perhaps it would be more evident with a concrete example: - 仕事をやめて自由な時間が増えた反面、緊張感もなくなってしまった - Even though quitting my job has left me with a lot of free time, I also feel like I've lost my edge Here's a hinative post where a native speaker explains this sentence specifically https://hinative.com/ja/questions/5956424#answer-15740577 |

Comments: | From the editorial policy: "The "[expl]" tag is usually not used if it is the only gloss in the sense." I think we should stick to this. JMdict is full of terms that are glossed using a short description/explanation rather than a translation and it hasn't caused any problems so far. I worry we'd run into consistency issues if we started using expl for some single-gloss entries but not for others. |

I might be misremembering but was there some back and forth on whether to tag the single gloss of an entry as expl?
