Comments: | I do think we should include pastry in the first sense, or even as a separate sense. There's a discernible difference in the search results on google images for 甘いパン vs "sweet bread". Japanese Wikipedia describes a "Danish" like this: "デニッシュとは、パンの一種。" English wikipedia says "A Danish pastry, sometimes shortened to just Danish, is a multilayered, laminated sweet pastry in the viennoiserie tradition." I'm having trouble finding any English-language references to Danish pastry as "bread." On Quora (a site I definitely don't hold in high repute, but still), the consensus seems to be that a croissant is not a bread but a pastry. https://www.quora.com/Is-croissant-a-type-of-bread enwiki, again, says that "Pastry is differentiated from bread by having a higher fat content" |

The way I understand it from elsewhere is that 伯 is for older and 叔 is for younger, but I don't think the definition currently explains this very clearly. Perhaps at least there should be a "respectively" in there somewhere... |

Comments: | "acoustic" really just means to do with sound. Some people coined "acoustic guitar" because "guitar" alone had come to mean the electrified variety (but not to me), then that got abbreviated to just "acoustic" and then it took on the "non-electrified" meaning. All a bit of a mess. I feel it needs a little more. |

Comments: | with "acoustic" as a second gloss, we don't really need the disambig, do we? I don't think this is strictly speaking 形動. None of the dictionaries list it as such. I think the 形動 use is col or sl and that we shouldn't list such use unless the entire sense is tagged col/sl. I don't think x+な ngram results should ever be used to tag something as adj-na, there's too much non-relevant stuff picked up. (xなの, xなん etc.) |

6. | A* 2021-09-29 15:30:28 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
Comments: | Thank you for taking the time to argue your case, it is appreciated, as are your contributions to the project (something we're not always very good at making clear). The "best answer" in the hinativethread you linked to was in full: "Suppose you are a figure skater and about to do your performance. If you get too nervous, you cannot move smoothly and won't get a good result. That's how we say as 緊張. However, to concentrate on your performance with a sense of tension is important for a good result. That sense of tension is 良い緊張感, or we often say 良い意味での緊張感." The (apparently bilingual) person is still chosing to call this "positive" feeling a "sense of tension" in English. When I suggested I could imagine a US sportsman talk about a "good kind of nervousness", this is what I was referring to. I think the usage is basically the same in English. I disagree with your assessment that the current glosses fail to capture the meaning of いい意味での緊張感. I think "nervousness/sense of tension, in a positive sense" captures that usage quite well so I don't really see the need for additional glosses, let alone a separate sense. There's always room for improvement though and we might be able to refine sense 1. "sense of urgency" maybe fits in there, but I'm not really sure, the connotations of it feel slightly different to me. I'll let somebody else weigh in on that. |
|
5. | A* 2021-09-29 14:37:39 Jacob Albano <...address hidden...>
Comments: | Marcus: 良い緊張感 is not a phrase in and of itself. 良い is being used here to *specify* "the good kind of 緊張感"; they go on to say 良い意味での緊張感 which is obviously a complete descriptive phrase. My comments on 緊張感がない are relevant here as well. Jim: It seemed more helpful to me to add a new sense rather than adding the (positive) meanings from my suggestion into the (negative) sense we already have. 緊張感 is very much akin to テンション, in both its literal meaning and also the way it can be either positive or negative based on context; we have two separate senses for テンション that capture this. At the very least, this 良い意味での緊張感 is not captured at all by the existing sense for 緊張感. |

Comments: | I disagree, I think it being common, and being obviously more common than similar possible constructs, is why we include any compound noun in the dictionary. I don't think it's weird to expect an unabridged dictionary that doesn't censor itself to have an entry like this. I don't think it's unthinkable it could be usable for reverse lookups (remember that reverse lookups aren't always exact but happen through google which is good at throwing up relevant weblio's ei-wa pages which include our definitions) http://www.edrdg.org/wiki/index.php/Editorial_policy#Is_it_worth_including.3F "is it not what someone reasonably proficient in Japanese would come up with when trying to express the English meaning in Japanese?" |

Comments: | I don't think that fact alone justifies its inclusion. "Clothed sex" is probably the most common term for this in English but I wouldn't expect to find it in an EJ dictionary. It's not as though this would be helpful for reverse lookups. |

Comments: | Jim: Fair enough indeed, I generally don't like thesauruses too much myself but I'm finding it difficult to source this phrase formally and felt that it would be my best option. Perhaps it would be more evident with a concrete example: - 仕事をやめて自由な時間が増えた反面、緊張感もなくなってしまった - Even though quitting my job has left me with a lot of free time, I also feel like I've lost my edge Here's a hinative post where a native speaker explains this sentence specifically https://hinative.com/ja/questions/5956424#answer-15740577 |

Comments: | That meaning is certainly not backed by GG5. I don't find Weblio's thesaurus to be a lot of use as its synonyms are often only loosely related. I'd never take it alone as the basis for a translation. |
