I've largely given up trying to make this work better as an EJ database. It would be good though if we could get terms like contrapuntal associated in some ways with these sorts of entries.

We don't usually include separate adj-no senses just to help reverse lookups. I don't think many people are looking up "contrapuntal" anyway.

I guess so. We split なのです and なのだ. I'll do that now.
I like keeping the terms in the indices complete as it helps identify modifications to the sentences themselves. Around 50-70 sentences get changed each week and I have software that tracks and identifies the changes. The completeness of the indices is central to this.

encountered in murakami book. confusing to me, because I first thought it might be cookies for animals, but the common use seems to be animal-shaped cookies.. in the book hower, it seems to refer to a tv-series 'animal crackers'. so 'animal crackers' seems correct.

I agree with Marcus. An EJ dictionary wouldn't include a "上に何が..." sense for "what's up?" just to cover usage like "what's up there?" Also, "what it is" isn't so much a separate sense as a different parsing of the words.
The "so what?" meaning is more interesting but I'm not sure it's needed as an entry.

I don't think that first sense belongs here. When it comes to literal and other meanings of expressions that aren't included 
in other dictionaries, I think we probably err on the side of inclusion a little too often. Sometimes we have to trust that 
users will understand that an expression can be a set phrase while also have another meaning if it appears in another 
context, that isn't really worth noting.

"lend/give colour to" means "make something seem true or probable", so I think 真実味 is being used with its standard meaning here.
However, I do wonder if the Japanese in that Tanaka sentence is a mistranslation. My interpretation of the English sentence is that the photo has the effect of making the story "come alive", as opposed to making it more credible/believable (which is what I feel is implied by 真実味が出る). I'm not certain, though.
