Comments: | Could be a second gloss on the third sense, but that screws with calling it an abbr of 新型コロナウイルス感染症 not sure what to call this sense 4 an abbr of. コロナ過 is maybe the closest? enwiki has one article for COVID-19 and a separate one for the COVID-19 pandemic. |
Comments: | I think "madly in love" works well for sense 1, but it's very different from what's in the kokugos. sense 2 isn't great, though. daijr has しまりなく崩れるさま。だらしがないさま。「孫には―だ」「主将のけがでチームは―になった」 I think separating this daijr definition into two senses in English makes sense, but "falling down drunk" doesn't cover that 2nd example at all. |

Refs: | Umbonium costatum is the translation in the 新和英大辞典。 |
|
Comments: | This shell habitat is mainly around Japan and the shell is well reported in Japanese literature due to its resemblance with abacus' stones. The present translation "periwinkle" refers to Littorina littorea which is a European shell of different shape, different color and different family. In addition "periwinkle" without any mention could also refer to the flower Vinca major or Vinca minor and the associated color, and this has absolutely no relationship to Umbonium costatum and 細螺 きさご;きしゃご In addition, there is an old Japanese reading of 細螺 which is しただに. I am not sure about the dictionary's policy as to old Japanese readings, so I leave it to the editing person. |

Comments: | It was probably a mistake to define this as "self-appointed enforcer of _social distancing_", even with the "etc." tacked on, as 自粛 has little to do with social distancing. The things I remember from the news at the time were mainly about people posting anonymous notes (sometimes with threats) on businesses remaining open. I'd say "enforcer of lockdown recommendations" except there never was an actual lockdown in place here. "enforcer of government recommendations to combat the spread of COVID-19" is probably too wordy. What's a good compromise? |

4. | A 2021-08-08 01:58:17 Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I wasn't sure it was really "archaic". Sometimes an abandoned name may only be a few years in the past. I'll try and stick to selecting surface form for xrefs - I tend to default to sequence numbers. |
|
3. | A* 2021-08-07 22:30:32 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
Comments: | Any reason we can't tag this as archaic? Also, can we make sure to create x-refs using the desired surface form as opposed to the sequence number (i.e. [see=キサゴ] instead of [see=1663600])? That way, obscure kanji forms aren't carried over. |
