Comments: | added "to make available" for the meaning "役立てる(状態にしておく)" found in shinmeikai. kenkyuusha has an example sentence with that translation: ・"一般の縦覧に供する open sth to the public; place [put] sth on show; make sth available for public viewing" also on kenkyuusha, this two other sentence: ・薬用に供する use 《a herb》 as a ┏medicine [remedy] 《for…》; use sth for medicinal purposes ・実験に供する experiment on…; use sth for ┏an experiment [experimental purposes]. should a meaning like "to put to use" be added? I'm not sure if I'm misunderstanding the translations or... I leave that judgement in the hands of someone more experienced. |

Comments: | Might want to remove [news1]. Probably not [hist] or [dated], but I sense it's got some of that nuance. Google search( ~500 reported results, largely historical in nature): "宰相" site:mainichi.jp vs. (~4,300,000 reported, endless at least) "首相" site:mainichi.jp I'm not quite sure how this got [news1], as I don't know who might have been using this title in the late 90s. Google search of mainichi.jp today doesn't return nearly enough to justify this. 総理 と 総理大臣 と 宰相 はどう違いますか https://ja.hinative.com/questions/16895392 「総理」は「総理大臣」の略です。 「宰相」も「総理大臣」の意味ですが、あまり使われません。 <<---- 宰相 not used so much 「宰相」の元々の意味は中国の政治のトップの意味のようです。 "common" as this term may be, it seems to mostly be of historical use and dwarfed by modern equivalents. The wikipedia page says it "can" be used as a nickname for the Japanese prime minister. I am sure this is true, occasionally... I sense a little incredulity in the English wikipedia entry: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prime_Minister_of_Japan is known in Japanese as Naikaku Sōri-Daijin (内閣総理大臣) whenever he is referred to as the head of the Cabinet. However, this title is usually abbreviated to Sōri-Daijin (総理大臣). Other abbreviations include Sōri (総理), Shushō (首相) or even Saishō (宰相).[5] site:twitter.com "安倍宰相" 7 hits on twitter site:twitter.com "安倍首相" 40,000? (obviously inflated, but...) |

Comments: | Considering that 愛する is 10 times as common as 愛す and 愛さない is 10 times as common as 愛しない, it seems a bit awkward to say that 愛しない is the negative form of 愛する and 愛さない is the negative form of 愛す. ---- Here is my proposed solution. Create a single conjugation table for [vs-s] and [vs-c]. Something like this: plain: 愛する, 愛す polite: 愛します negative: 愛さない, 愛しない neg. polite: 愛しません past: 愛した ... Link both [vs-s] and [vs-c] verbs to this table. This is the approach adopted in jwiki(サ行変格活用) |

Comments: | 分かる has a lot of subtle meanings, not all of which fall under "understand", including the context I just encountered. (pointing towards well-dressed men)人の偉いさは分かりづらい、だからああやって見た目で分かるようにするんだ。 trans: It's hard to tell which humans are important. So they dress themselves up to make it obvious. My own intuition is to adds something like "difficult to discern/recognize" but I haven't found particular support for that. "hard to tell" strikes me as the right sense, but doesn't quite map directly from : nounは分かりづらい. You can't say "importance is hard to tell" or "hard-to-tell importance". You have to transform it into "it's hard to tell how important".... eijiro has "confusing" in one context. There's one reverso example of "puzzling". I like both, but neither of these works for my specific example though, and it doesn't seem like an unusual use-case to me. Hmm, google translates in isolation as "Confusing" You might have some better ideas. |

Comments: | Correction. The Jesuits also published a romaji edition of the 平家物語, which stayed around too. Samples on that BL page. |

Comments: | I agree. Interestingly. it was the only Jesuit publication that continued to be around after the Tokugawas banned Christianity. The rest were rounded up and destroyed. I worked on a research project on some about 20 years ago, but we used copies held by the Vatican. |
