Comments: | I think it would be OK. We've done a similar thing with ブラシ/刷子, ランプ/洋灯 and ポンプ/喞筒. "gikun" marks a kanji reading so a uk tag isn't needed, and 緬甸 is obsolete whether it's read めんでん or ビルマ so "obs" is still fine. |
|
17. | A 2021-08-13 00:19:49 Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I'd leave it alone. I wouldn't want ビルマ in two entries, and if it went off to the 緬甸 entry as a "gikun" reading it would have to be "uk", and the "obs" would have to come off, etc. et. |
|
16. | A* 2021-08-12 15:58:02 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
Comments: | Should we drop the note and instead add "ビルマ" to the 緬甸/めんでん entry as a gikun reading? |

Comments: | Apparently this is a calque from English(at least for sense [2]). Never heard of it, but "royal road" is the most common reverso gloss. sankoku does not identify as adj-na, but usage suggests otherwise. There is a 的 form, which I have created separately. Yourei has 940 examples, 60 of which are 的. の seems more common as an adj. than な, but な does appear. As an adjective this *seems* to be at least primarily (perhaps entirely) sense [3]. https://yourei.jp/王道 We don't commonly xref the 的 forms from the main forms, but at least this offers some [adj] glosses. This is far less "stodgy" of a usage than I expected. Is 王道のやり方 an easy method, or a traditional method? From what I've seen so far, it seems to be the latter. |

Comments: | I'd keep it, if only because the JEs have it. Yes, better to have the more internationally understood gloss first, but I don't think there's any need to go around re-ordering things on those grounds. |
|
7. | A* 2021-08-12 22:10:39 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I agree that "two weeks" should lead but is this entry even needed? I don't think it's necessary to have a Japanese translation for "fortnight". Anyone can work out that "two weeks" is "2週間". |
|
6. | A* 2021-08-11 22:31:12 Opencooper
Comments: | My intention was to place the more "universal" [0] gloss first. At least in my understanding, "two weeks" isn't strictly AmEng. This is also how gg5 has it (which doesn't mark "two weeks" as 米, but does mark "fortnight"). I think we can agree that the order of our glosses matters, even if we don't agree on the particular. [0]: http://www.edrdg.org/wiki/index.php/Editorial_policy#Meanings: "make the translations as international as possible." |
|
5. | A* 2021-08-11 12:10:44
Comments: | The main reason fot having this as an entry in the first place is that "fortnight" isn't a straightforward translation, isn't it? |
|
4. | A* 2021-08-11 08:40:05 Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
Comments: | So the first gloss has to be the preferred AmE term? I would have thought having both would be enough. |
