Comments: | I agree that the meaning is pretty much the same as sense 4, but the examples Marcus gave, and which I've encountered often, are not really adverbs or "before a verb in negative form". I feel trying to fit this particular usage into sense 4 would lead to an odd POS and clashing glosses. The [abbr] and reference to ちょっと難しい can be dropped. |

Comments: | Nobody else splits "paternal blood;lineage" from "progeny" and some even have "sperm" in with one or two of those meanings but I thought it would be weird to combine them all. But maybe somebody else can come up with something better that works with just 2 senses. the "cause/source" sense ended up being moved from 4 to 5 - I tried my best to keep it as it was but since I think the 3 closely related senses (3,4,5) should come together, I had to nudge it. (but if somebody else can reduce 3,4,5 to 2 senses instead of 3, it won't move). I removed "kind, variety, quality, tone" glosses that were in sense 1entirely, not really sure where they came from. |

Comments: | I don't think we'll get a working entry out of this. It's いい (most senses) plus な in various forms, and the actual meaning depends totally on context, intonation, body language, etc. The original eikaiwa reference is probably correct with the "jealous" meaning, but it also means so many other things it's quite wrong to have an entry with that alone. We'd need about 10 senses to cover all the possible meanings in all situations. I'm deleting this (to shorten the queue) and I'll reopen it to see if anyone else wants to continue the discussion or come up with a solution. |
|
7. | A* 2021-06-15 04:07:49 Nicolas Maia
Comments: | I think removing the nuance of jealousy severely limits the usefulness of this entry. I don't think it's a good idea. |
|
6. | A* 2021-06-15 00:20:36 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I don't think we can translate a short and simple expression like いいな as "I'm jealous" or "you're so lucky". It's what's implied in certain contexts but it's no different from "wow" or "nice" in that respect. |
