Comments: | OK, but do you really think that for example Louis Pasteur (bolded), David Hilbert (bolded) are more commonly referred to in Japanese mainstream discourse, better known to a large amount of people, than Florence Nightingale? Or even Richard Wagner, Moliere, Alan Turing, Immanuel Kant, John Locke? I'm pretty sure they're not. I think you can hit up a random 15-y-o on the street and the name they'd be the best-acquainted list of those + Nightingale, would be Nightingale. I actually added her name here because I heard a nurse say "ナイチンゲー ル精神じゃないけど・・・" in a TV interview. (I think it was -精神, not 100% sure) The Wikipedia list seems to focus on people who were the most IMPORTANT in their respective fields rather than people who are well-known and frequently referenced to. Maybe that's a key difference between an encyclopedia trying to assign importance to different topics, while a dictionary is merely trying to describe a language as it's used? I think it would make more sense to make frequency of reference rather than "importance" the guiding principle here. |

Comments: | We currently only have a handful of person entries in JMdict. Unless we want to significantly expand their number, I don't think Florence Nightingale quite makes the grade at this moment in time. I note that she isn't included in the biography section of Wikipedia's "List of articles every Wikipedia should have", which could possibly serve as a guide for deciding which people should have an entry in JMdict. There are about 60 "top-priority" people on that page (marked in bold). |

|
Comments: | Can't speak to historical usage, but modern use seems to clearly prefer せんじゃ over せんしゃ (the latter being nonexistent, even though the old kokugos seem to feel differently). うらないしゃ needs the full 占い者 form. It really feels like うらないしゃ should come first as a reading, even though daijs doesn't give it explicitly. This is probably one of those [col]/[form] kunyomi/onyomi splits we've put into one entry. Just searching for "占者" alone, this is what I encountered(せんじゃ): Manga called 占者高生 星見先輩. Reading: せんじゃこうせい ほしみせんぱい https://mangapedia.com/占者高生星見先輩-qbkwratb9 Fortune-teller playing card: 未来占者 = みらいせんじゃ https://www.cardrush.jp/product/51747 Another: 探検隊の占者 たんけんたいのせんじゃ https://mtg-jp.com/products/card-gallery/0000192/491685/ うらないじゃ(ja) was noted previously as only in nikk. That would be a very unusual pronunciation (there are 0 other occurrences of verb-form-い者 as じゃ, and only a few nouns that end in いじゃ. At best, most likely archaic. For me, this falls into the "more harm than good" category to be visible. There might be some book results from the 1800s, or I'd just drop it entirely. Windows 11 IME cannot complete any of these but うらないしゃ. ngram counts for furigana forms are useless for determining frequency, because せんしゃ and せんじゃ have more common, unrelated uses (戦車, 選者). The terms are too rare to search ngrams with disambiguating collocations. |

Edamame are just green soybeans so maybe that's enough for 枝豆豆腐 to be considered "tofu", but I take Jim's point about the lack of curdling. "Tofu-like" is probably more accurate. |
