Refs: | https://ejje.weblio.jp/sentence/content/"ままならな" http://yourei.jp/ままならない https://eow.alc.co.jp/search?q=ままなら |
|
Comments: | I know this is used in maxims such as 人生はままならない but the phrase is used in much more mundane contexts too such as this quote from A dog of Flanders: ジェハンじいさんは自分一人で食べていくことすらままならない状態でした。 The old man could ill contrive to support himself And this quote from Fate/Stay Night: 息をする事さえままならない体で、ぼんやりと空を眺めていた。 He was looking idly up at the sky though he could breathe only with great effort. And this examlpe from Daijisen: 多忙でデートもままならぬ unable to go on dates due to being too busy And many others that were linked above. And I think that these 3 glosses "beyond one's control; not always turning out as one wishes; not going the way one wants it to" (Good for the maxims) are distracting from this meaning. It is only the "unable to do" gloss that fits this arguably very common mundane use. So in the light of this I propose moving that gloss up, and adding 2 more. |

Comments: | Noted [8-)}]. The "edict2" format used by WWWJDIC uses EUC-JP coding which supports the JIS X 0208 and 0212 character sets. The standard conversion from UTF-8 to EUC simply drops unsupported characters, but our routine does a few fiddles of the ㈱ -> (株) variety. sometimes with amusing results. |

Comments: | Missed that it doesn't always come after the company name, my bad. I think this use is very common, not sure if sense 2 might have been one position too high up but it's definitely not 8/8 in terms of percentage of usage. I think it was worthwhile to include the glyph ㈱ in the note because searching for it right now (on jisho for example) doesn't turn up anything. |

Raw Google WWW counts are close to useless - this is the firm advice of senior people at Google. For しごおわ Google initially reports "About 58,000 results", but only initially shows 40 results. The Twitter results are interesting and more contemporary, so I'm inclined to accept it on that basis. |

That alone is enough to sneak it into the n-gram corpus (Chinese people talking about Japan, Japanese people talking about Taiwanese terms). Are there kokugo refs for this? |
Comments: | Exceedingly rare. daijs says 粗末な食物. wordsense gloss seems perfect. Original ref was: 粗末な食物。粗食。菜食。そしい。そしいい The fact that 菜食 may mean "vegetable meal", but I don't think that was meant to indicate anything strict in the "vegetarian" sense. Just "cheap" (no meat, maybe no rice?). Not a term used by modern vegetarians. Because it is rare, and not in use, I don't think there is any benefit to xrefs. |

Refs: | >BMW is sometimes abbreviated to BM in (spoken) English as well. https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11437 Maybe just in British English (+related varieties), though? Also worth noting "BM" doesn't mean "bowel movements" in Japanese which might be the main meaning in US English 😂 |

Comments: | I'm trying to avoid the situation with some dictionary clients, such as WWWJDIC, which will show partial matches. If you look up BM you'll be offered the entries for BMD, BMX, etc. but not necessarily the BMW one in the names dictionary. It's not a big deal, but I like being helpful to the users. |
|
3. | A* 2021-03-03 20:11:43 Robin Scott <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | Is this really needed? BMW is sometimes abbreviated to BM in (spoken) English as well. If we want to record it, I think the names dictionary is a better place for it. |
