Comments: | It's late, I'm throwing in the towel for now (except for the xref and [rare]). The xref makes no special note of being the "standard" way of executing a computer program. Perhaps it should. These are all terms I've now run across with regard to computer process scheduling: 実行可能(状態) "runnable(state)" (a process which can be scheduled on a cpu if a cpu is available) 実行中(状態) "running(state)" (a process currently being executed) in turn, these are far-less-common variants: 走行可能 走行中 Wikipedia chose the uncommon variants in 2010 when the article was created. They should probably switch. But the fact remains that Japanese people aren't bothered by this usage, so one couldn't call it "incorrect". Google image search: 実行可能状態 or 実行可能 = CPU scheduling diagrams 走行可能状態 or 走行可能 = vehicle speedometers 実行可能 152069 77.6% 走行可能 43996 22.4% 実行可能状態 2120 80.6% 走行可能状態 510 19.4% (and this is mostly for automobiles) I still think this is quite uncommon as a verb as well. But anyway. When I've regained my senses after being derailed by this last-minute discovery, I may revisit some related terms. |

(It does give a defn. for a tape recorder 録音機:テープがまわること. Maybe if we go back to the "press play on tape" days there was a connection to software...) wiktionary has a bunch of senses, but not "execute a program" https://ja.wiktionary.org/wiki/走行 most 和英辞典 do not carry sense[2] https://ejje.weblio.jp/content/走行 Search twitter for "プログラムが走行" (or を走行) and you'll get ~1 match per year (some of which definitely do not look like native translation). プログラムが実行 can be measured in hits-per-day. For comparison: プログラムが走らない 100 4.0% プログラムが走る 403 16.0% プログラムを走らせる 2021 80.1% (really needs a causative form) |
|
Comments: | I have removed sense [2] entirely. The correct term is 実行. It is in my opinion(after considerable searching) not even worth marking [rare] with an xref. It is not included in most 和英辞典, I don't see it in any Japanese dictionaries, I don't see it used prevalently on twitter or google books (like, 3 hits) or anywhere else. This is not to say that no one in history has ever used (or mistranslated) it this way, since the gloss is "running". "programming" was an emerging thing with a lot of E->J translations and new coinages. But I can't find any evidence suggesting that this should be considered a useful gloss of this term(the likelihood of encountering it seems vanishingly low, and if it were encountered, the meaning would be self-evident anyway). If you want to consider a more productive (mis-?)translation, we don't gloss 走る as "to execute a program", but it clearly is used this way, particularly in the causative form: プログラムを走らせる 2021 (far more than 走行, anyway). I'm not suggesting that we should add this sense (though maybe?) In fact, I could go on. I hate arguing with GG5. Always an uphill struggle. Let me add to this point that a *lot* of words that mean "to operate" or "to run" can be used to "run a program". The following are all more common than 走行, and don't carry a special sense for it(some senses to seem generic enough to apply, however): プログラムを動作させる 2165 プログラムを動かせる 245 プログラムを働かせる 97 プログラムを作動させる 221 プログラムを稼働させる 112 プログラムを稼動させる 120 プログラムを機能させる 37 プログラムを発動させる 87 (this is not an exhaustive list, just the first page of run/process hits I grabbed) This entry---> プログラムを走行さ 27 ---> プログラムが走行 38 Which is to say, this doesn't seem particularly special in anyway, and I think that listing it with a special, dedicated sense for "running a program" does more harm than good, even as [rare]. Final note: https://ejje.weblio.jp/content/走行 日英・英日専門用語辞書での「走行」の英訳 gives "job run" and "program run", with the following Japanese: ジョブの走行 0 0.0% compare to the correct term(which it is missing): ジョブの実行 4012 100.0% for "program run" it gives all three of these: プログラムの走行 84 0.5% プログラム走行 116 0.6% プログラム実行 18390 98.9% <----- correct term it leaves off this one: プログラムの実行 41669 <---- even more of the correct term. |

Comments: | Thanks for the technical info about this kanji. Helpful to know. I don't object to including 搔 on this entry (and others). I just felt we didn't need a corresponding 搔 form for every existing 掻 form, and that the (kokugo) headword forms were sufficient (which is what I meant when I said "base forms"). I didn't actually mean to drop 掻き雑ぜる. And I'll add 搔きまぜる back in because Tyler said he encountered it. I don't think we need 掻交ぜる, 掻混ぜる, etc., which are all extremely obscure. There are six forms if we include every variant. According to daij and koj, the き isn't optional. |

Comments: | Comments from a fork by Tyler: Apologies, yes I went overboard on this one. It was the first one I did For each ref, I'd like at least one of their headwords to be included, so they can be found in a cross search. Ideally all headwords, since very often some of the forms are missed when scraping dictionary data for external software 搔きまぜる - added this because I actually found it while reading. I guess it's not super necessary though 搔き雑ぜる - added this because it is a headword in 大辞林 (かき ま・ぜる [4][0]【▼搔き混ぜる・▼搔き▽雑ぜる】) Ideally should be included, but since 搔き混ぜる is here that is enough to pull up the entry 搔混ぜる/搔雑ぜる - headwords in 岩波 (かきま‐ぜる【搔(き)混ぜる・搔(き)雑ぜる】) Added them to be safe, but yeah if 搔き混ぜる or 搔き雑ぜる are here then that is enough to pull up the entry |

Comments: | The 掻/搔 situation is a result of a process that's been going on in kanji circles for some years. Years ago the JSC people locked in on the simplified 掻 for what became JIS X 0208, then put 搔 into a supplementary standard - JIS X 0212 (which meant no-one used it because Microsoft didn't support it.) Then 搔 was put into Unicode and into JIS X 0213 (an extension of JIS X 0208). Its sort-of legitimization meant that the electronic versions of the kokugos could start including it, which they are now doing, e.g. the 6th edition of 広辞苑. 搔 doesn't show up much in the n-grams because they are derived from oldish data. I expect more contemporary text to show increased use of kanji like 搔. I think there's no harm in including these forms if they are in kokugos, and I think Tyler has been sticking to that. If terms using them start showing up then people should be able to find them here without having to navigate through base forms. I also think the "oK" is appropriate, at least at this stage. |

Comments: | Not happy with the gloss as it is, because it is too specific: the basic meaning of クロカン is still "crosscountry" and as that widely used in connection with skis, for example, and not only in reference to vehicles. See references (a few of many on the web). Suggest including the basic meaning. |

Comments: | Sense[2] -> [rare] Add some kanji and kana forms. Sense[2] is even in sankoku, but I've yet to find an example in the wild. If you search sankoku's example 話にわさびをきかせる, you get one hit: "to pepper/spice up one's speech", from 和英日本文化表現辞典 sankoku: たいせつなところで強くするどくせまるひょうげんがある。「わさびの利いた評論」 「わさびを効かせる」「話にー」 (one exception to my remarks below, sankoku's exact example appears in a comment on an article/blog post here:) https://agora-web.jp/archives/1026129.html ...しかし、わさびの利いた評論はなかなか得がたいものですから、いつかは自分もやってみたいと思っています。 Makes me suspicious that sankoku used this very example for lack of anything else... Changing 利いた to きいた yields one additional internet forum comment. Otherwise, I've tried every variant of this I can come up with, all I get is sense[1]. This is the simplest variant that *should* produce something (it doesn't) わさびを利かせた話 Twitter search for a simple ”わさびをきかせた": all food https://twitter.com/search?q="わさびを効かせた"&src=typed_query&f=top Given how obvious the meaning would be, I'm sure if someone used this in sense[2] they would probably be understood. But this doesn't appear to be any sort of "common" formulation. Too bad, looked like fun. |
