The kokugos that mention it can mean "(a)

We should. I may be able to work out how to annotate that page (referenced) where entries have the "adv" removed.

Like many other time-related entries, this was tagged as n-adv to indicate that it can be used without a particle, as in "次の日、 ...", "ある日、...", etc. [n-adv] has since been converted to [n,adv] but I don't think it's correct to label words like this as adverbs. We should probably go through the former n-adv entries to clean up the PoS tags at some point.
