i think i'm okay with keeping them separate, but sense 2 should have actual translations...  once those are added, the two senses will look rather different and justifiably kept apart.  and the "polite set phrase..." glosses should maybe be notes?

I am inclined to agree with Marcus's comment from 2018 that sense 2 could be merged into sense 1. If we leave the senses as is, though, we do need to reindex the sentences.

evolutionary biology or phylogenetics, yeah.  but i mean i only get 7 google hits for "もっとも新しい共通祖先" (0 ngrams).  最も近い共通祖先 (for which we already have an entry) at least gets 25 ngrams.  the meaning is clear, and short of a solid reference, i think this can be omitted

I'll can this one for now, but I think we need to work out the best way to handle the 〜すぎる compound nouns. They're using the last (and only "uk") sense of the 過ぎる entry, which isn't a lot of help for learners.

yeah, -sugiru is so productive that i think that we should have a "rule" that the entries aren't included unless they appear in a major kokugo or gg5, etc.

If anything, I think that's a case for deleting some of our existing -すぎる entries.
We don't have 高すぎる, 長すぎる, 暑すぎる, etc., which are all much more common than 苦すぎる.
