Comments: | I know this is used in maxims such as 人生はままならない but the phrase is used in much more mundane contexts too such as this quote from A dog of Flanders: ジェハンじいさんは自分一人で食べていくことすらままならない状態でした。 The old man could ill contrive to support himself And this quote from Fate/Stay Night: 息をする事さえままならない体で、ぼんやりと空を眺めていた。 He was looking idly up at the sky though he could breathe only with great effort. And this examlpe from Daijisen: 多忙でデートもままならぬ unable to go on dates due to being too busy And many others that were linked above. And I think that these 3 glosses "beyond one's control; not always turning out as one wishes; not going the way one wants it to" (Good for the maxims) are distracting from this meaning. It is only the "unable to do" gloss that fits this arguably very common mundane use. So in the light of this I propose moving that gloss up, and adding 2 more. |

Comments: | It can be a bit of a fine line. We generally assign [food] when the term is a recognized foodstuff such as you would buy in a grocery, see in recipes, etc. Also, we usually don't stray too far from the field classifications in other dictionaries. In this case the 新和英大辞典第5版 tags it as [化] and not [料], so we're in the same ballpark there. I see that reference also has [化] for クエン酸 although you'll see that lists of contents too. Making the "milk sugar" a parenthesized expansion might work, but I suspect 乳糖 is probably a bit wider than just lactose. Koj/Daij, etc. are fairly broad on this and the JEs (quoted) have both as separate glosses. |
|
4. | A* 2021-02-18 04:36:38 Allan Wirth <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I'm not sure I understand why this is not a food term? I saw it on the ingredients list of a pack of oreos, as in they directly added lactose. In a technical sense "milk sugar" covers a breadth of sugars other than lactose (doi:10.1007/978-1-4615-7050-9_1) although obviously lactose is the main one. 乳糖 term seems to be used to refer to lactose specifically (デジタル大辞泉 contains the molecular formula https://dictionary.goo.ne.jp/word/乳糖/) This seems to be relevant from the editorial policy: "where the English meaning is an obscure technical term, add a short explanation in lay terms after it in parentheses. Do not add such explanations where the English meaning should be clear to a literate user (this is not an English dictionary.)" Perhaps the entry could be "lactose (the primary sugar in milk)" |

The philosophical part seems to be tied up with the German "notwendige Arbeit" and Marx's "socially necessary labour". Not sure it's an appropriate entry - it's not in the kokugos - they have 必要労働時間. |

Comments: | I agree with Robin about gerunds. Plurals too. The tag is really intended for cases where the source is rather different from the usual English translation. I think it would be a bit excessive to label all ex-English 外来語 as such. The kokugos, and specialist dictionaries like Gakken usually only label the source language when it's not English. |
|
5. | A* 2021-02-19 00:37:40 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
Comments: | This is maybe a different discussion, but I actually think all English loanwords should be marked as such for better "searchability" (I think I might have raised this on the mailing list at some point, not sure). |

4. | A* 2021-02-19 00:08:45 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
