Comments: | (Accidentally created a fork; adding my comment here): The thing is that it can also be a noun if you say 今日はフレンチにしよう。Let's have French food today. It's basically a shortening of フランス料理. So it might be worth adding "French food" as a separate definition, although I believe this is only done on a regular basis for フレンチ、イタリアン、スパニッシュ and メキシカン. You don't say "今日はコリアンにしよう。" If it's not one of these four, country+料理 is more common. |

Comments: | I recently commented on 未訳. Jim agreed with my intuition that this was not [n]. I have a similar intuition for most [adj-no] beginning with 未. If you do a jmdict advanced search for: starts-with: 未 starts-with: un noun: [check] You will get 90 matches. Maybe 1/4 of them are glossed with adjectives (the others have a noun stem, like 未使用品). I would personally remove [n] from nearly all of those. They would need to be hand-checked though. You can find some more with different English prefixes (in, im, non, not) You might skim a google book search yourself for "未使用を" to see if there is a convincing argument to leave [n]. In shopping and computer science, there is a common contrast between 使用・未使用, but I think the interpretation in these cases is still as adjectives "used/unused(computer memory, product, etc.)", not as nouns "usage/disusage?". It's a category that could just as easily have an adjective in the same spot. 新しい/古い... I'm going to edit two other similar terms, and then leave for discussion. |

Comments: | "dick" is originally a euphemism too - "Ultimately from Dick, pet form of the name Richard. The name Dick came to mean "everyman", whence the word acquired its other meanings." (wiktionary) (though wiktionary also calls "dick" (with the meaning penis) "vulgar") I've seen ナニ in subtitles to represent quite vulgar words so I think "dick" works ok if it's the last gloss. |

Comments: | I've noticed that ナニ (always in katakana) is frequently used in Japanese subtitles of English-language movies/TV shows with the meaning "penis". I asked a native speaker if this is really an established expression (when I first saw it) and they commented it's at least commonly used like this in subtitles. It's really a subsense of sense 2 but it seems common enough to get its own sense. "masturbation"/"to have sex" don't seem quite as common (and I haven't encountered the word used like that in the wild/in Jp subtitles either) I considered creating a separate kana-only entry for ナニ but it can be and is of course used with other senses of 何 too and I wouldn't want to direct users looking up the more innocuous use to the wrong entry. |
