Comments: | "trunk room" does exist as a term in English but I don't think it's used with this meaning (I've never heard it before). Googling "trunk room" returns some images of storage units but they're all from Japanese sites. |

Comments: | I think the Moon and moon;satellite should be 2 separate senses because unlike in English, 月 is not at all commonly used for the 2nd sense, which is almost always 衛星, even in books about space for children. 月 almost always refers spec to our Moon. |

Comments: | No problem. My way of thinking has been that it's good to have variants when the English word is one-to- one with the Japanese, like 色 = color/colour, but not so much when the gloss itself just contains the word "color". So the case of neighbor/neighbour is fine for 隣人, but not here. |
|
5. | A* 2021-11-20 20:15:45 Jim Breen <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | Sorry. I misread the original edit and thought you'd just changed one word, hence my narky comment. Mea culpa. I used to be keen on having both BrE and AmE spellings to help EJ lookups; now I'm not chasing that goal and I don't care much which forms are used. |

Comments: | I know the diffs are sometimes opaque or incorrect, so let me explain. The entry prior to my edit was like so: neighbor with just a wall between; neighbour with just a wall between [0] I found the second gloss, which only differed in the variant of English for a single word, to be redundant, so I removed it. This was done without preference towards American or British English. I've stepped on some toes in the past regarding English variants, so it's my fault for not explaining the edit in the comments. Comments: | Additionally, in 告白① it doesn't matter who you're confessing to, but 告白② has to be directed towards the specific person one has feelings for. It's really quite something specific that I think needs to be separate from the general "confession" sense. |

Refs: | https://www.tofugu.com/japan/kokuhaku-love-confessing-japan/ KOKUHAKU: JAPAN'S LOVE CONFESSING CULTURE ... kokuhaku 告白こくはく, literally means "confession", and it is done when a man or a woman declares their love to another, and hopes to begin dating that person. ... You may go out with the person a few times or go out on a group date, but your relationship hasn't technically started until this love confession, aka kokuhaku, occurs. https://skdesu.com/en/confess-kokuhaku-tsukiatte-kudasai-request-dating/ The art of declaring or confessing love in Japan is known as Kokuhaku [告白] already in the case of inviting a person to go out or date after declaring yourself, if you use Tsukiatte kudasai [付き合ってください]. Kokuhaku [告白] literally means “confession”, and it is done when a man or a woman declare your love to another, and hopes to start dating that person soon after. The word can also mean recognition and even confessional. https://ci.nii.ac.jp/naid/40019825078 恋愛における〈告白〉の形成に見る現代日本社会 (unfortunately not available) https://ir.lib.hiroshima-u.ac.jp/ja/00019550 "恋愛における告白の成功・失敗の規定因" English title: "Factors influencing success and failure of confessing one's love" ↑ This is a good example why "confessing one's love" doesn't actually work well as a translation. It's not necessarily immediately obvious what "success/failure" refers to here with that gloss. How can you fail at confessing your love? If somebody told me "I failed at confessing my love" I'd first assume they were saying they just didn't go through with it. 告白を失敗 |
|
Comments: | I really think there's a really large cultural context to Japanese 告白 which is something that demands a proper explanation and lumping it in with any random confession is doing a disservice to our users who largely are beginner- level learners. Also this sense is decidedly [vi], which alone is a very good reason to have it separately from the vt "confession". (kind of irrelevant but there's a very good translation for this sense in Swedish: "fråga chans", except it's only used by elementary school kids. https://en.bab.la/dictionary/swedish-english/fråga-chans ) |

Comments: | If you search for "baby carriage", which is also maybe dated in English but not quite as much as 乳母車 in Japanese , you won't find anything but this entry. I'd rather not add "baby carriage" to the ベビーカー entry, but this at least tells people what to use instead of this dated term (if it doesn't occur to them to search for "stroller"). Based on google image results, it looks like fashionable wicker strollers (乳母車) may be making a small comeback in Japan. |

Comments: | Robin's suggestion has been there for a while and no one has responded. I think it's a good way to go. The "koyomi" romaji version seems to get little or no use - most WWW hits are for a brand of shochu. I'll pull this back to one sense, drop the koyomi gloss, and unless there are objections I'll edit the glosses of the ~20 entries with "koyomi" in them. |

Comments: | I surely don't care about "city of lights". I only added it because "gay paris" seemed like an attempted translation of the nickname, so it seemed like we wanted a nickname. Otherwise, please google "gay city". Or, for that matter, "gay Paris". Or do an image search for 花の都 vs "gay capital" or "gay paris". GG5 contains a certain amount of dated terminology. I was trying to make the point that "Gay Paris" was perfectly valid once-upon-a-time. But this is no longer a useful alignment. The term has been completely appropriated for another use. Even suggesting "gay" here just sets a trap for a Japanese translator to stumble over. I still don't understand why we are trying to translate "花の都" to anything other than "floral city" or "city of flowers". Most translations would just be "Paris", maybe with "which the Japanese call the Capital of Flowers", or something. Here's a definition of 花の都 https://kobun.weblio.jp/content/花の都 学研全訳古語辞典 学研教育出版学研教育出版 都の美称。はなやかで美しい都。また、桜が咲き競う都。 Inspired by the definition above, I have changed the xref from 花[8](beautiful) to 華やか directly, which should adequately communicate how Paris (probably) acquired this nickname(this is reflected in the [refs] above). I have intentionally not selected either [1] or [2], because both seem to figure into the logic behind the name. My vote for the actual gloss is still something like Paris (nickname) or Nickname for a Capital City (esp. Paris, Florence) But 花ー>華やか is basically the same relationship as flower->flourishing, so I've made the suggestion. I don't see the utility in glossing as "fine" (or "gay"). When people say 花の都, it's just a name. I've often seen the Japanese term for "pillow-word" used to describe 花の都. I can call my hometown of Seattle "The emerald city" out of affection, but beyond loosely being aware that the trees are evergreen, I don't think you'd try to simplify a gloss as 常緑樹の都(though you might explain it with a sentence)... The name just is what it is; calque it, explain it, or drop it in the translation. Not so critical... note: it was pointed out to me in the ref above that Florence is *literally* derived from "Flor"/flower, and thus has earned this nickname another way as well. |
