We add such cross references when they make sense, but I'm not really seeing how this would be a solution to the problem you're seeing here. It's probably
better to tag entries that are obscure as [obsc] (or [obs], [arch], [dated]) and let apps and sites use that info + our frequency tags to make reverse
searches bring up the most relevant entry on top and perhaps hide some others. (jisho.org does not currently hide entries that are tagged obsc from
reverse searches. If you think they should, it'd be best to take it up with them.)

I've suggested implementing an explicit "more commonly as" type of xref on the Github, which by the way is a better place to discuss topics that concern
policy than the comment section of an individual entry.
https://github.com/JMdictProject/JMdictIssues/issues

If you come across any other obscure katakana words you think should have xrefs to more common words with similar meaning or be tagged as [obsc], go ahead
and edit them.
5. A* 2021-11-17 10:16:27  Tsuchida
  Comments:
Thank you for the reactions. I understand the notion of including obscure terms as long as they’re well-documented. However, in that case,
wouldn’t it be a good idea to try and more actively add cross references if it’s an obscure katakana entry, in order to avoid learner confusion as
I described in my previous comment? I’m not saying every katakana term has a “Japanese” equivalent; katakana terms are very much Japanese
themselves and they can have different nuances than their “equivalent”, so a cross reference would not always be in place. But again I’m trying
to look at it from the perspective of language learning and user friendliness.
4. A 2021-11-16 11:43:15  Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
It's also in 現代人のカタカナ語辞典 and mentioned
in daijs' オポジション entry. To try and answer
Tsuchida's question: we don't add words like
this unless there's some evidence they're
being used or appear in some other dictionary
or work of reference. We don't avoid obscure
or outdated words if their usage is well-
documented.

Additionally, in 告白① it doesn't matter who
you're confessing to, but 告白② has to be
directed towards the specific person one has
feelings for. It's really quite something
specific that I think needs to be separate
from the general "confession" sense.

KOKUHAKU: JAPAN'S LOVE CONFESSING CULTURE
... kokuhaku 告白こくはく, literally means "confession", and it is done when a man or a woman declares their love to
another, and hopes to begin dating that person.
... You may go out with the person a few times or go out on a group date, but your relationship hasn't technically
started until this love confession, aka kokuhaku, occurs.
https://skdesu.com/en/confess-kokuhaku-tsukiatte-kudasai-request-dating/
The art of declaring or confessing love in Japan is known as Kokuhaku [告白] already in the case of inviting a person to
go out or date after declaring yourself, if you use Tsukiatte kudasai [付き合ってください].
Kokuhaku [告白] literally means “confession”, and it is done when a man or a woman declare your love to another, and
hopes to start dating that person soon after. The word can also mean recognition and even confessional.

"恋愛における告白の成功・失敗の規定因"
English title: "Factors influencing success and failure of confessing one's love"
↑
This is a good example why "confessing one's love" doesn't actually work well as a translation. It's not necessarily
immediately obvious what "success/failure" refers to here with that gloss. How can you fail at confessing your love? If
somebody told me "I failed at confessing my love" I'd first assume they were saying they just didn't go through with
it. 告白を失敗
  Comments:
I really think there's a really large cultural context to Japanese 告白 which is something that demands a proper
explanation and lumping it in with any random confession is doing a disservice to our users who largely are beginner-
level learners. Also this sense is decidedly [vi], which alone is a very good reason to have it separately from the vt
"confession".

(kind of irrelevant but there's a very good translation for this sense in Swedish: "fråga chans", except it's only used
by elementary school kids. https://en.bab.la/dictionary/swedish-english/fråga-chans )

I don't think 遣う can be described as a "rarely used kanji form" just 使う is significantly more common. Any native speaker will encounter it somewhat frequently. Prog and Wisdom use
it in several example sentences.
Grouping 遣う with things like 西班牙 and 了る doesn't seem right to me.

As of this year (2023), Japanese law has a single crime for rape that covers various circumstances. Before that, there was a distinction between "rape involving violence or threat" and "incapacitated rape". According to the kokugos, 暴行 refers to the former category.
In US federal law, the terminology is "by force or threat". Maybe just "by force" is sufficient.

I assume the intended nuance from "(violent)" might be similar to the typically-understood distinction between "assault" and "aggravated assault"? Of course the action in question is inherently violent, but we cannot deny that there is nevertheless a significant difference in *character* between the stereotypical "jumped in an alley" scenario versus the (tragically) more common "taken advantage of by someone you trust" scenario... Is there anyone familiar with how these distinctions are drawn in practice in, for example, Japanese law? What an unpleasant topic.

Maaaybe here, though? But it's still a bit of a stretch, all of these added together. The point of the rK as I see it isn't to say
"this kanji might as well not have been included in this entry at all, it's completely pointless" but to tell esp. early learners
that it's quite rare and that they don't need to bother learning it by heart to feel they "know" the word in question, and also to
provide guidance for reverse lookups. It's not to say they won't ever, in a lifetime of reading Japanese, possibly come across it or
find reason to use it. Since we do mention it in a note on sense 2, and considering these ngrams, I'm OK with removing it, though.

I think the application of rK has to be
percentage-based, nothing else makes sense or
is actually helpful. If it's a lot more common
for a particular sense than overall, I
wouldn't tag it as rK though. But how common
is it for sense 2?

Do we really want to tag a form with 34k in the ngrams as "rare"? I know it's less than 1% of 歌う's count but the difference is probably a lot
smaller if you look only at sense 2 usage (詠う doesn't apply to sense 1).

  Comments:
I don't think "express a desire" is ideal - I would read it as somebody explicitly saying they want something, when that's not what this
means - and "to display want" sounds a little unnatural to me. "to indicate" also sounds very intentional and while it can be, it
certainly doesn't have to be. It also sounds like the "wish" is being pointed out quite clearly when this is more about

私 being the subject is rare but when it is, the context is about somebody else reacting e.g. by noticing the speaker's feelings and
buying something for them. e.g. google results for "私が欲しがって" (all from the first page):
"空港で私が欲しがってたらきゃんちが買ってくれたお魚シート♪( ´θ`)ノ"
" “私が欲しがってた バスの降車ボタン 娘が見つけて ガチャってきてくれたよ"
"友達以上恋人未満の彼から、私が欲しがってたアロマセットをプレゼントしてもらいました。"
"夫「ガレージにきて」私「うん」→私が欲しがってた新品のバイクがドーンと置いてあった!"

daijr: ほしいと思う。ほしそうなようすをする。
I think "appear to" (ようす sense 2: "look; appearance") and "seem to" work the best fit here.

I think GG5's explanation is good - the ...を表す is important, It's more about expressing and stating rather than appearing.
I'll suggest some tweaks.

The point I was making is that it won't be obvious from the original glosses that this is a verb you only use to describe what others appear to want. You
wouldn't say X私はこれほしがっているよね to say "I want this", and I think this needs to be made clear in all -がる entries.
5. A* 2021-11-18 06:33:28  Jim Breen <...address hidden...>

My problem with this suggestion is that none of the 3 JEs I use has any mention of appear/seemingly, and none of the 11 Tanaka sentences does either. The closest I can see is a また at the end of Koj's explanation. The original glosses are pretty close to the ones in the references. I suspect it's used just as a verbification of 欲しい.

rh avatar
the descent of a deity to the earth in an
incarnate form or some manifest shape

OK so it's usu. used spec in hinduism but I
think it's actually more fitting than
incarnation because w incarnation, I get the
feeling the Buddha has been reborn on Earth,
or at least a manifestation in a more
permanent form (Jesus being God incarnate),
while 化現 seems to include more temporary
manifestations (like say in the Greek myths)

Also I'm not convinced 化現 has to be in a
"bodily form", that's not specified in the
kokugos ("姿を変えて"). brit for example says
仏陀や菩薩が,この現実世界に惑い苦しむ生きとし生けるもの
を救うために,-いろいろな形をとって-現実の世界に現れるこ
と。 (my emphasis)

Well, nikk is very clear: 残念に思っている様子を態
度に表わす。 残念そうにする。
and this is how the -がる suffix is used.
Again, mk's def: …という気持ちや様子を外に見せる意を
表す。
GG5's definition is maybe OK in the context of
it being a wa-ei dictionary for Japanese
speakers who won't have to have it explained
that a -がる verb will (in the absolute
majority of cases) not be used when the
subject is oneself. I think we need to spell
it out, though.

As with 欲しがる the JEs are not featuring the appear/seem aspect. I think it's really a more direct adjectival derivation from 残念.

芸術、文化、ファッションといった社交方面での華やかさが街を活気づけており、その美を象徴的に例えて「花の都」と呼ばれる。基本的には日本独特の言い回しである。パリの街は実際に花も多いが、草花でなく公園や街路にある木々の花が目立つ。

https://note-mitaskuras.tohogas.co.jp/n/n87b448f69747

所以には諸説ありますが、ナポレオンによる大改革の後の1800年代後期~1900年代初頭、多くの芸術家がこの街に集まりました。芸術や文化が栄え、社交界が華やかに活気付いた様子をみた日本人がパリを「花の都」と呼ぶようになったそうです。実際、パリの街は草花よりも、公園の樹や街路樹の葉の印象が強いのですが、美しい建築を背景に、街路樹の葉が風にそよぐ姿はやはり格別に美しいです。

loose summary mine: not known for its flowers in particular, Japanese artists who studied there may have been impressed by how arts, culture, and society flourished, along with its beautiful architecture
  Comments:
I surely don't care about "city of lights". I only added it because "gay paris" seemed like an attempted translation of the nickname, so it seemed like we wanted a nickname.

Otherwise, please google "gay city". Or, for that matter, "gay Paris". Or do an image search for 花の都 vs "gay capital" or "gay paris".

GG5 contains a certain amount of dated terminology. I was trying to make the point that "Gay Paris" was perfectly valid once-upon-a-time. But this is no longer a useful alignment. The term has been completely appropriated for another use. Even suggesting "gay" here just sets a trap for a Japanese translator to stumble over.

I still don't understand why we are trying to translate "花の都" to anything other than "floral city" or "city of flowers". Most translations would just be "Paris", maybe with "which the Japanese call the Capital of Flowers", or something.

Here's a definition of 花の都
https://kobun.weblio.jp/content/花の都
学研全訳古語辞典 学研教育出版学研教育出版
都の美称。はなやかで美しい都。また、桜が咲き競う都。

Inspired by the definition above, I have changed the xref from 花[8](beautiful) to 華やか directly, which should adequately communicate how Paris (probably) acquired this nickname(this is reflected in the [refs] above). I have intentionally not selected either [1] or [2], because both seem to figure into the logic behind the name.

My vote for the actual gloss is still something like
Paris (nickname)
or
Nickname for a Capital City (esp. Paris, Florence)

But 花ー>華やか is basically the same relationship as flower->flourishing, so I've made the suggestion. I don't see the utility in glossing as "fine" (or "gay"). When people say 花の都, it's just a name. I've often seen the Japanese term for "pillow-word" used to describe 花の都. I can call my hometown of Seattle "The emerald city" out of affection, but beyond loosely being aware that the trees are evergreen, I don't think you'd try to simplify a gloss as 常緑樹の都(though you might explain it with a sentence)... The name just is what it is; calque it, explain it, or drop it in the translation. Not so critical...

note: it was pointed out to me in the ref above that Florence is *literally* derived from "Flor"/flower, and thus has earned this nickname another way as well.

In English common law, fee tail or entail is a form of trust established by deed or settlement which restricts the sale or inheritance of
an estate in real property and prevents the property from being sold, devised by will, or otherwise alienated by the tenant-in-
possession, and instead causes it to pass automatically by operation of law to an heir determined by the settlement deed.
