Comments: | I don't think the fact that the word is usually introduced with an explanation is a strong argument against including it here. When we're talking about katakana versions of words in English then yes, it can constitute evidence that the English word is just being discussed in the context of English language, not actually used in Japanese, but I don't think that's very convincing when we're talking about a word (or sense) that is exclusively Japanese. I'd similarly expect any obscure to semi-obscure historical term to be explained/described in the first instance its' used in most texts. That said I might agree with you that there wouldn't be a need to record this if it were _just_ a slightly obscure historical term that hadn't received any attention outside of scholarly circles, but again, the fact that it's recently received attention both in and outside of Japan, in national press, that led to an actual apology and a name change, means it's something dictionaries from now on really should be including. |
|
7. | A* 2021-11-11 21:36:49 Robin Scott <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | It almost always appears in a form like "「マルタ」と呼ばれた", "「マルタ」と称した", etc., which are mentions (not uses) of the word - an important distinction. I don't think a word that hasn't at any point been widely used for its meaning meets the criteria for inclusion. |

Comments: | It's one meaning of the word that has recently received media attention in China and Korea (and as a result of this coverage, also in Japan). I think it'd be remiss to not mention it here. It's obscure in the sense that the average Japanese person won't be aware of this meaning, yes, but it's obviously not at all obscure in a historical sense. |

In some cases, such as the 三十三所 entry, "thirty-three temples" looks more natural than "33 temples". I'll use roman numerals for the glosses for days 1-10 for consistency include ごにち[ik]? Comments: | Additionally, in 告白① it doesn't matter who you're confessing to, but 告白② has to be directed towards the specific person one has feelings for. It's really quite something specific that I think needs to be separate from the general "confession" sense. |

Refs: | https://www.tofugu.com/japan/kokuhaku-love-confessing-japan/ KOKUHAKU: JAPAN'S LOVE CONFESSING CULTURE ... kokuhaku 告白こくはく, literally means "confession", and it is done when a man or a woman declares their love to another, and hopes to begin dating that person. ... You may go out with the person a few times or go out on a group date, but your relationship hasn't technically started until this love confession, aka kokuhaku, occurs. https://skdesu.com/en/confess-kokuhaku-tsukiatte-kudasai-request-dating/ The art of declaring or confessing love in Japan is known as Kokuhaku [告白] already in the case of inviting a person to go out or date after declaring yourself, if you use Tsukiatte kudasai [付き合ってください]. Kokuhaku [告白] literally means “confession”, and it is done when a man or a woman declare your love to another, and hopes to start dating that person soon after. The word can also mean recognition and even confessional. https://ci.nii.ac.jp/naid/40019825078 恋愛における〈告白〉の形成に見る現代日本社会 (unfortunately not available) https://ir.lib.hiroshima-u.ac.jp/ja/00019550 "恋愛における告白の成功・失敗の規定因" English title: "Factors influencing success and failure of confessing one's love" ↑ This is a good example why "confessing one's love" doesn't actually work well as a translation. It's not necessarily immediately obvious what "success/failure" refers to here with that gloss. How can you fail at confessing your love? If somebody told me "I failed at confessing my love" I'd first assume they were saying they just didn't go through with it. 告白を失敗 |
|
Comments: | I really think there's a really large cultural context to Japanese 告白 which is something that demands a proper explanation and lumping it in with any random confession is doing a disservice to our users who largely are beginner- level learners. Also this sense is decidedly [vi], which alone is a very good reason to have it separately from the vt "confession". (kind of irrelevant but there's a very good translation for this sense in Swedish: "fråga chans", except it's only used by elementary school kids. https://en.bab.la/dictionary/swedish-english/fråga-chans ) |

The conversation was about nishinari-ku and the election (they elected sb from Soka Gakkai). it was something like this: "下民(げみん)やからな。貧乏な人は宗教に行っちゃう" I don't think "masses" "common people" work in this sentence. a derogatory "underclass" does. "riffraff" might be a little off, I don't know, but it seems to be in the right general area. |

Comments: | I'm not sure げみん is the more common reading. Saito only has かみん. There are only 11 examples with furigana in Aozora so we can't read too much into those percentages. Not a common word nowadays anyway. I think "riffraff" is the wrong register. I think the nuance of "underclass" might be too negative, even for げみん. The kokugos define げみん as "しもじもの者", which GG5 glosses as "the lower classes; ordinary [the common] people; the masses." As long as we lead with "lower classes", I think these glosses are fine. |

Long-story-short on the rest: 刺激 means "irritating" in the skin-response-to-chemicals sense, but pretty much nothing else, and definitely not "annoying". This term is widely misused by English speakers(this unadorned gloss predates jmdictdb), and I think needs some kind of clarification. ==== I've spent a while looking at this entry, and 刺激性. Wordreference seems to have it figured out. Under "irritation" in the E->J direction, where there are many potential glosses, 刺激 is limited to (cause discomfort to part of body)/(身体の一部). irritate⇒ vtr (annoy) (人) ~をイライラさせる、怒らせる、いら立たせる 他動 (身体の一部) ~を刺激する、炎症を起させる 他動 ex. This sweater's a bit irritating if you wear it next to your skin. Under 刺激 they list: irritation n (skin reaction) That seems a bit narrow. You can 刺激 any tissue of the body I think(lungs, eyes, nose, etc.). The wikipedia entry for 刺激性 is all about chemical irritants. 刺激性's #1 use is for irritation of the body (skin, eyes, nose, lungs, etc.). 刺激性 as 刺激 + 性 for senses[2] and [3] here is comparatively quite rare. The unadorned gloss of irritation has, I think, lead to a lot of poor translations. Just a handful of the many bad "examples" on reverso: Filter packs screen out offensive and irritating Web pages. フィルターパックは攻撃的で刺激性のWebページをふるい落とす。 I have never in my life met someone so irritating. 私は刺激性の誰かに会ったことがない私の人生を持っている。 Please help me to solve this irritating issue by suggesting an optimum solution. ...刺激性の問題... It is very irritating as you cannot watch your favorite video peacefully. あなたが好きなビデオを平和的に見ることができないので、とても刺激的です。 and on and on.... https://context.reverso.net/翻訳/英語-日本語/irritating On that list of examples, 刺激性の問題 legitimately exists, but only as "the problem of(skin) irritants". (not "an annoying problem") 皮膚刺激性の問題も事実上ない https://fams-skin.com/famsbook/famsbook-3621/ I'm open to any other ideas for clarification. |

Comments: | I don't think "express a desire" is ideal - I would read it as somebody explicitly saying they want something, when that's not what this means - and "to display want" sounds a little unnatural to me. "to indicate" also sounds very intentional and while it can be, it certainly doesn't have to be. It also sounds like the "wish" is being pointed out quite clearly when this is more about 私 being the subject is rare but when it is, the context is about somebody else reacting e.g. by noticing the speaker's feelings and buying something for them. e.g. google results for "私が欲しがって" (all from the first page): "空港で私が欲しがってたらきゃんちが買ってくれたお魚シート♪( ´θ`)ノ" " “私が欲しがってた バスの降車ボタン 娘が見つけて ガチャってきてくれたよ" "友達以上恋人未満の彼から、私が欲しがってたアロマセットをプレゼントしてもらいました。" "夫「ガレージにきて」私「うん」→私が欲しがってた新品のバイクがドーンと置いてあった!" daijr: ほしいと思う。ほしそうなようすをする。 I think "appear to" (ようす sense 2: "look; appearance") and "seem to" work the best fit here. |

Comments: | I was going to comment that it seems only to be used in the third person (as in all 11 sentences), but then I saw that ルミナス example which is first person. I think GG5's explanation is good - the ...を表す is important, It's more about expressing and stating rather than appearing. I'll suggest some tweaks. |

You wouldn't say X私はこれほしがっているよね to say "I want this", and I think this needs to be made clear in all -がる entries. |

Comments: | My problem with this suggestion is that none of the 3 JEs I use has any mention of appear/seemingly, and none of the 11 Tanaka sentences does either. The closest I can see is a また at the end of Koj's explanation. The original glosses are pretty close to the ones in the references. I suspect it's used just as a verbification of 欲しい. |
