Comments: | I think it's important to remember that in Japanese, all words commonly written with 4 characters are literally yoji jukugo. This is incidentally why I proposed back when that we use [iyoji] for "idiomatic yojijukugo" instead of [yoji]. I don't think that saying that words like 三角関係 are [yoji] conveys any real information to our end users. It's not proverb-like or even consisting of two or more parts that tell a story (like 弱肉強食 or even 一国一城). It's a compound noun, where 三角 modifies 関係, that merely happens to be written with 4 characters. It's not strictly speaking wrong to call this or even 焼肉定食 yoji jukugo, but if we're merely using it to point out the number of characters in the kanji field, then what's the point? (I raised this point on the mailing list in 2018, suggesting we get rid of the tag) |

Comments: | Isn't the "thing inside one's body ..." gloss sufficient for explaining 虫の知らせ? Whether the insect is real or figurative doesn't seem relevant to me. Meikyo and shinmeikai don't even mention the traditional belief. It might be better to lead with the descriptive gloss and add "believed to ..." |

Comments: | I still feel quite strongly that an explanatory note on sense 3 is appropriate and helpful. I want to put an xref here from 虫の知らせ but what's the point if we don't explain that this was originally used literally? I think the etymology/traditional belief has bearings on how the word is used/understood today as well. |

Comments: | Neither was homophone/homophony, I imagine. We already lead with "homophone" on 同音異義語. What distinguishes these terms is that 同音異字 words *must* have different written forms. There is no such requirement for 同音意義語/homophones. 同音異字 words are heterographs, 100%, so I see no reason not to include the term. The 同音異字 Wikipedia article even has a "heterograph" section. |

Refs: | https://www.nytimes.com/2007/06/11/business/media/11caa.html For the powers at the Creative Artists Agency, Hollywood’s pre-eminent talent representative, the coming blockbuster “Transformers” has already brought a lesson in the cold-hearted ways of corporate entertainment. ... In that time, it not only raided competitors for agents and talent in the movie and television businesses ... And its success or failure is likely to tell whether talents as varied as Will Ferrell, Tom Cruise, Jerry Bruckheimer, Derek Jeter or Norah Jones — Creative Artists clients all — will maintain their leverage against evolving media giants ... https://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/23/world/asia/unknown-in-america-david-spector-carves-out-niche-in-japan.html But Mr. Spector’s main claim to fame may simply be his durability. He is the last of the big “gaijin tarento,” or foreign talents — Japanese-speaking foreigners who became celebrities here in the boom years of the 1980s simply by sounding off about life in Japan, and feeding the country’s narcissistic fascination with how the world views it. |

Comments: | Yes, "ゼロ型" -"血液" confirms that too. I'll add 0型 as an iK in the O型 entry as you suggest. |
|
10. | D* 2022-02-17 09:37:35 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
Comments: | The few entries about this are explanations saying that O型 was actually originally 0型. not in Japanese but in the original German. ゼロ型 can also refer to a number of different other things which becomes apparent if you google for "0型" -血液. I don't think this can be called an established term meaning "type O blood" and having this as an entry can be misinterpreted. I wouldn't mind including 0型 as an iK in the O型 entry but it doesn't belong here as a separate entry. |
|
9. | A 2021-11-13 04:53:29 Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
Comments: | If it was just 0型 I'd happily ditch it, but with 1814 in the n-grams for ゼロ型, and that form relating to O型, I think it should stay. |

Comments: | Unless it's obsolete, we usually lead with the literal meaning, even if it's the less common sense. I think that's what we should do here. |

Comments: | Given that "actor" is often used as a gender-neutral term nowadays, I don't think the "actress" glosses are needed here. It's clear that this doesn't refer exclusively to male performers. |

Refs: | https://ameblo.jp/yamapote/entry-12632281131.html 読売新聞の記事では、「芝居人」の用例はなし、「演劇人」は1880年ごろ以降の使用があり、「舞台人」は1930年代からの使用があります。用例から、 「演劇人」は劇作家などまで広く含まれ、「舞台人」は俳優や演出家、舞台監督など、実際の舞台の公演にかかわる人に限定して使われてもいるようで す。 so not just the performers, perhaps. but not just theatre either based on the other link (where it referred to a stage magician) I'm having a hard time coming up with a gloss that encompasses all of this. "person working with stage performances (including the actor or stage performer)" ? It might be OK as-is as well, I think. (my apologies to any director feeling left out) |
