Comments: | Personally, I don't have any problem with recording weird gikun data like this. I think JMdict has some structural quirks that make them difficult to merge, though. If we added 運命 to the entry for 定め, we wouldn't be able to use the [gikun] tag on the reading because that tag is only true for 運命, not 定め. We'd also have to add some sense restrictions. It would be a little messy. Since this entry, うんめい【運命】, only has one sense and one kanji form, and the sense happens to be the correct meaning for さだめ【運命】, we can add that gikun reading cleanly. Not every situation is as clean as this one, though. |
|
11. | A* 2024-01-03 10:15:10 Brian Krznarich <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | Sorry to comment late on an approved/closed entry, I'm happy with the result. Just to reply to Stephen on-record in case the discussion ever comes up again: It's not so much that 運命 might be randomly pronounced さだめ when reading(I agree, it wouldn't without furigana). Rather, it's the other way around: if you want to *write* さだめ in kanji, there are two commonly-recognized kanji orthographies: 1. 定め 2. 運命+furigana. (the latter less common, of course). This is why I mentioned the alternative of adding 運命 to the さだめ entry instead. But I know this isn't how jmdict is usually used(J->E translation/decipherment). Whether さだめ is here, or 運命 is in the other entry, there is probably not much practical impact. |

Refs: | Sankoku also records gikun forms like そら【宇宙】. You do see things like this a lot in popular media, especially song lyrics. I wouldn't think anyone would read the word this way without furigana, though. It's marked as a 熟字訓 in sankoku, so I think we'd be correct to use the [gikun] tag. |

Comments: | Like many other time-related entries, this was tagged as n-adv to indicate that it can be used without a particle, as in "次の日、 ...", "ある日、...", etc. [n-adv] has since been converted to [n,adv] but I don't think it's correct to label words like this as adverbs. We should probably go through the former n-adv entries to clean up the PoS tags at some point. |

|
Comments: | It's not just us that combine 収める/納める/おさめる - The three Kenkyusha JEs (GG5, 中辞典, ルミナス) do it too, as do 広辞苑, 大辞林, etc. As shown, 中辞典 has "supply" but indicates in the example that 納める is used. GG5 has a combined 納める/収める entry and a separate 収める entry. That may be the way to go, but it would be a lot of work. Perhaps putting the "to supply" sense back with a 納める restriction would be simpler. |

Comments: | Jeff Korpa (2823300) submitted: "The meaning in JMdict reads "five-day workweek system", but the reference I have provided has a different take on this, so I am submitting the alternate meaning for consideration. Perhaps there should be two meanings -- "A week in a month with 2 days off" would be the meaning exclusive to Japan whereas "five-day workweek system" would be the meaning outside Japan." Jim: Happy to add this as an extra sense, but as the references above show, JMdict is not alone in its original meaning. Did the Japanese lexicographers really get it so wrong? Or have some companies got sneaky in their interpretation of terminology? I'll leave this open for discussion for a bit. |

In this case I can't see it being more than the sum of the parts, especially now I have put "public" as the first gloss of 公(の), and upgraded the 場 entry in the glossing file. E.g.: - 公の from 公 【おおやけ】 (adj-no) public; open; official; formal ... - 場 【ば;じょう】 (ば) place; spot; space (2) field; discipline ... |

Comments: | since it's 予告 rather than say 脅迫 I feel this implies "I will kill you (using an axe) (on November 15)" and is less likely to refer to something more informal with a conditional like the spoken "If you fuck with me again, I'll kill you!" If that second one is a "death threat" but not a 殺害予告, I think we need to somehow clarify that. |

Refs: | アーケードモード 23422 https://forums.tomshardware.com/threads/what-does-arcade-mode-mean-when-gamers-are-talking-about-current-games.2143133/ It's actually harder to explain than you may think. The term dates back to the coin-op age. Basically, it's an increasingly difficult fixed length game mode, accompanied by a small story, either about the character you selected or just generally about the situation you were thrown into, or accompanied by no story at all. No extra content whatsoever, as in you would've just gotten in front of the coin-op cabinet, tossed in a coin and started playing. Mostly used in fighting games or endless survivals (1 life, restart on lose, get as far as you can), It's a pick-up-and-play no-brainer mode where you can just fire up the game, press start and play; there's rarely any customization besides apparences, there are no quirks, no perks, no level ups, nothing else than the game's core itself. |
