I think "star" should lead or perhaps be the only gloss because
1) "fixed star" has a specific meaning which isn't really the same as a "star that is fixed (i.e. not moving in the manner of planets or
satellites)" (that is, the mw definition)
2) even in material aimed for kids, the sun and other stars are described as 恒星 rather than 星. case in point, my 4-y-o nephew's DVD

in my book, the main person is (mentally..) making a row of shampoo bottles. making a "permutation" seems to be a too mathematical translation.

I'm actually not sure if the author isn't talking about making all possible permutations of these bottles ("junretukumiawase ni sureba"), but GG5 at least lists this second reading.

koj says it's the same as kuda-gitsune... which has an entry in English Wikipedia.
"The kuda-gitsune or kuda-kitsune (管狐, クダ狐), also pronounced kanko, is a type of spirit possession in legends around
various parts of Japan. It may be known otherwise as osaki especially in the Kantō region, and also considered
equivalent to the izuna.

It was believed to assume the guise of a small mammal and able to fit inside a pipe or bamboo tube, but normally only
its keeper or user (kitsune-tsukai) was able to see it. The user, through the power of the kuda, was believed capable of
divulging a person's past or fortelling his future; this soothsayer was also capable of performing curses, bringing
calamity upon targets. In regions where the superstition was held, a prospering household could be accused of achieving
its prosperity because it was a house possed by the spirit (kuda-tsuki). The fox (and its analogues by other names) was
said to multiply in number each time a marriage took place, following the bride to her place of marriage, thus
disseminating into more households."

They do look similar, but no literate native speaker would have any trouble identifying which is which. I mean, 蜜 has 虫 in it. If 蜜 and 密 had similar or related meanings, I could believe that people were using 蜜 intentionally, but that's not the case. I still don't think it's needed.

Lafcadio Hearn:
http://academia.issendai.com/foxtales/japan-lafcadio-hearn.shtml
Now the fox for whom such a hole is made is an invisible fox, a phantom fox—the fox respectfully referred to by the
peasant as O-Kitsune-San. If he ever suffers himself to become visible, his colour is said to be snowy white.

According to some, there are various kinds of ghostly foxes. According to others, there are two sorts of foxes only, the
Inari-fox (O-Kitsune-San) and the wild fox (kitsune). Some people again class foxes into Superior and Inferior Foxes, and
allege the existence of four Superior Sorts—Byakko, Kokko, Jenko, and Reiko—all of which possess supernatural powers.
Others again count only three kinds of foxes—the Field-fox, the Man-fox, and the Inari-fox. But many confound the Field-
fox or wild fox with the Man-fox, and others identify the Inari-fox with the Man-fox. One cannot possibly unravel the
confusion of these beliefs, especially among the peasantry. The beliefs vary, moreover, in different districts. I have
only been able, after a residence of fourteen months in Izumo, where the superstition is especially strong, and marked by
certain unique features, to make the following very loose summary of them:

All foxes have supernatural power. There are good and bad foxes.
  Comments:
I'm thinking something like "fox with supernatural powers" might be better than "fox spirit" (in this and other entries
dealing with them)
3. A* 2021-10-01 01:31:51  Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
Hm, maybe "fox spirit" or something like it (that separates it from other foxes) is OK as a translation for 妖狐.
九尾の狐 for example is defined in the following way in the kokugos
daijs: 九本の尾をもつ狐。古くはめでたい獣とされたが、後には、多くの年を経た妖狐とされた。
daijr: (1)中国の古伝説で,太平の世に出るというめでたい獣。
(2)体毛が金色の老狐。妖狐とされる。金毛九尾の狐。
koj: 多くの年を経て、尾が九つにわかれ、変幻自在で人をだますという狐。

only koj doesn't define the 9-tailed fox as a 妖狐.

But "fox _spirit_" implies to me that it's bodiless, ghostlike, but I don't think that's correct, they're not
supernatural in that way.

  Comments:
I hadn't noticed that, but I still think we should ignore it, along with most other 〜日 terms. The major refs only have the 日〜 forms.
It isn't difficult to look up the characters individually. That's what we expect people to do with most two-country kanji terms. Only a small fraction of all the possible combinations are included in jmdict.
6. D* 2021-09-26 23:32:25  Nicolas Maia
  Comments:
Kotobank's new interface uses 葡日 specifically meaning Portuguese-Japanese [dictionary], which is what prompted the inclusion of this entry.

  Comments:
It's not arbitrary. For these two-character terms, 日 usually refers to the country, and in standard usage 日 comes first (e.g. 日米関係, not 米日関係).
和 is used when referring to the Japanese language, and there's a semantic difference between 和伊 and 伊和 so it makes sense to have both. (A 和伊辞典 is not the same thing as a 伊和辞典.)
日 can also refer to the Japanese language (usually in the context of translation or interpretation), but with the exception of 英日, 中日 and 韓日, 〜日 terms are uncommon.
4. D* 2021-09-26 11:12:30  Nicolas Maia

That seems arbitrary. We have both 伊和 and 和伊, for instance. No harm there.

From the editorial policy: "The "[expl]" tag is usually not used if it is the only gloss in the sense."
I think we should stick to this. JMdict is full of terms that are glossed using a short description/explanation rather than a translation and it hasn't caused any problems so far. I worry we'd run into consistency issues if we started using expl for some single-gloss entries but not for others.

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine the association between current methods for

I tried make it "designated city with public health center" but it's tricky.
I might be misremembering but was there some back and forth on whether to tag the single gloss of an entry as

  Comments:
The problem here is that いいですか is a very common form meaning can?/may?/Is it OK?/etc. Often ...てもいいですか, etc.
I'm not sure we need that form as an entry, but it would be misleading to have this one alone.

this seems a very common form of 'ii ka' (copy-pasted the meaning of 'ii ka')
