Comments: | Well, what I proposed was somewhat of an in-between; it did not go on to list every nuance but instead split both into two groups: those that work grammatically as a copula, and those that do not. However, the new sense was in part based on the meaning as it does not work as a copula in its meaning either. In any case, I myself am not entirely sure it is needed, I proposed it as I considered that trying to reconcile "それがだ" with the notion of 'being' could be confusing, and that the additional sense would immediately dispel any doubts. |
|
10. | A* 2024-08-13 00:41:22 Jim Breen <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | This proposed edit brings up the issue of what the approach should be for these sorts of entries. Do we basically state what the Japanese terms mean, or do we go into the intricacies of their function in Japanese grammar? For です/だ: - GG5 and other JEs take the simple approach, glossing them as "be" and with examples using "is". - Daijirin has a long introductory explanation beginning with "丁寧の意をもつ断定の助動詞。" and then goes on to six senses. I favour the simpler approach as in most JEs. I propose switching back to the previous single gloss. I'm comfortable with "aux-v". I take a similar position with the だ entry. |
