《π》 ▶ pi (3.1415926...) |
8. | A 2021-10-16 15:52:21 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
Comments: | Pi is an irrational number. It can't be compared with quantities like populations. When writing irrational numbers with digits (in a context like this), there has to be some sort of indication that it's an approximation. "pi (~3.14)" or "pi (approx. 3.14) would work but "pi (3.14)" is wrong. I think "noun" is correct. 円周率 is a name like "golden ratio or "Euler's number". Oxford, Collins and Cambridge have a "number" PoS but they all classify "pi" as a noun. |
7. | A 2021-10-16 14:01:40 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I disagree, when I google "Tokyo population" I get an info box that reads "Tokyo population: 13.96 million". The official Tokyo metropolitan government site instead gives a number rounded up to 3 decimal places. Neither uses an ellipsis to indicate that the actual number (expressed in millions) is not actually 13.960000 or 13.961000. I notice most English dictionaries define pi like "approximately 3.14xxx" or something similar and that one Oxford Languages dictionary does use the ellipsis so I'm OK with showing it like this, for clarity. I'm not sure whether number or noun is correct. Do most dictionaries have a [number] category to begin with? MW online has "2" as a pronoun/adjective, "3" as a noun. |
6. | A* 2021-10-16 11:59:39 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
Comments: | "3.14" without an ellipsis would be incorrect. Also, I think it looks better with a few more significant figures. "pi" is a noun in English dictionaries. And it shouldn't be capitalised. |

Refs: | https://trends.google.com/trends/explore? q=%22curry%20and%20rice%22,%22rice%20and%20cur ry%22 (google trends "curry and rice", "rice and curry") in the us, it's 50/50, in the UK and Australia, "curry and rice" dominates (2,1), in India and Sri Lanka, "rice and curry" does (2:1). https://trends.google.com/trends/explore? q=%22curry%20and%20rice%22,%22rice%20and%20cur ry%22,%22curry%20rice%22 If you throw "curry rice" into the mix, it suddenly dominates the searches in almost every country. |

Comments: | I think "curry rice" can mean both "curried rice" and "rice and curry", based on what I see in google images - but more freq rice and curry. also if you look at the way it's climbing in the ngrams I think it's reasonable to assume the reason it's become so common is that it coincides with the rise of Japanese curry in the English-speaking world |
8. | A* 2021-10-16 00:13:56 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
Comments: | Either is fine (I'd say "curry and rice") but I don't think we need both as glosses. Also, "curry rice" appears to be another way of saying "curried rice", which isn't the same thing as curry *and* rice. |

Comments: | "curry and rice" doesn't sound natural/like the name of a dish to me, but I see it's as common as "rice and curry" in the google books ngrams (to my surprise). I think we might as well include all valid and common forms here. |

I wouldn't call a bath at a hotel a "public bath" because it's not open to the public, only to the guests of the hotel. That said, many Japanese hotels do: https://www.keioprelia.co.jp/kyoto/en/bath/ Public Bath A moment of pure relaxation. Soak in a rejuvenating bath overlooking our inner garden. https://www.celestinehotels.jp/kyoto-gion/eng/facility/bath/ "The large public bath has a modern Japanese atmosphere and looks out to the “Ancient Garden”. It is a truly relaxing area available exclusively to hotel guests." https://www.princehotels.com/furano/facilities/public-bath/ Facilities Public Bath These baths are exclusively for hotel guests. Take a moment to relax and unwind after your travels. No matter how hard I try though, I'm not finding any results on Google for non-Japanese hotels saying they have "public baths". This paper reassesses the results of Japan’s financial deregulation over the last two decades. Japan’s Big Bang sought to transform a highly regulated bank-centered financial system to a transparent, market-centered financial system to revitalize Japan’s economy and aging society. Prior assessments generally view this reform effort as a failure due to Japan’s low economic growth rate. |
