All the J-Es have this as 3 senses (with the ordering of the last two varying):

2 [その上さらに] (we didn't have this)
3 [それだけで十分] (the other glosses)

Apologies in advance if this messes up the sentence indexing.

not strictly synonymous (see above). chalk is made of various forms of calcium carbonate (not necessarily pure calcite, which is just one form of calcium carbonate)

we have separate entries for calcite (方解石) and calcium carbonate (炭酸カルシウム), so i don't think they should be added here

I don't think we're in the business of cataloguing every kanji form of a word that has ever been used. If we were, we might be adding 50 more forms to our entry for みだれる, for example.

I only see the first three forms for かるた in my dictionaries. I think the rest could be dropped or hidden. If that's no good, we should at least use the [rK] tag; we're using [oK] for kyūjitai.

This is a very common word at Japanese baseball games. Many crowd chants revolve around yelling, "Kattobase, Surname!" I love
the definitions "sock it" and "wallop it" because they incorporate the feeling, use, and archaic nature of the phrase.
Kattobase has been in use since at least the 1970's and seems to have no meaning outside of baseball. The most accurate
possible translation for the word is "make a good hit," in this case, the word "hit" has special meaning in baseball. This
same meaning is a part of the meaning when you cheer, "kattobase!"

sense 3 is arguably not an abbr. at least it's not an abbr in any way different than sense 2.

in english "double bass" (or "contrabass") is already shortened to "bass", and presumably this is the shortening that was adopted from japanese. and in japanese, the usual term is コントラバス (german), and コントラバス (german) --> ベース (english) doesn't make a lot of sense

We've been ignoring this for a bit too long.
Often the は form of these patterns does not mean the same as the が form (Jay Rubin points out that 私はウナギです is usually not the same as 私がウナギです.) In this case, from the examples I have checked, they are largely the same.
I think it's a case-by-case thing, and I think this one can/should go in.
2. A* 2020-09-23 21:24:45  Rene Malenfant <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
i'm not sure if we have a policy on this, but i think we should avoid が --> は substitution forms. not only are they possible in a huge number of cases, but using は instead of が busts it up, no?
