12. | A* 2020-09-17 01:13:17 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
Comments: | That's never been a hard-and-fast rule, though. We'll often put less common senses first, e.g. when there's a literal and figurative meaning. The major JEs also tend to put more common senses first but they all lead with "circle" in this case. |
|
11. | A* 2020-09-17 00:35:02 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
Comments: | But... the dictionary style is to put the most common meaning first. Esp. when we're talking spoken language, "yen" must be more than 2 orders of magnitude more common as a meaning for 円 than "circle" is. I don't think we should make ad-hoc exceptions on the fly either, if "circle" should come first, then we should implement a concise and clear rule/test for when a less common meaning should supersede the most common one. |
|
10. | A* 2020-09-17 00:16:07 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I don't think it matters that "yen" is more common. 円/circle is an extremely common and basic word. Looks odd having it after the currency sense. |
|
9. | A* 2020-09-16 22:33:37 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
Comments: | "yen" is the more common meaning by far, so I disagree. (I don't think the note is needed either.) |

Comments: | I'm happy with this order, but the note has to go - that sense is alive and well. I wonder how many people on seeing 円 solo in the context of a circle would read it as えん rather than まる? I'll close this, and reopen for further discussion, if needed. |

The colloquial/derogatory glosses are always tagged as such. I don't think we need to do that here. "Rat" is unlikely to be a helpful gloss to the sort of people who use jmdict (Japanese learners and J->E translators). |

Comments: | The JEs often start their English glosses with short Japanese explanations of the context, etc. For its "-とは" entry GG5 begins sense 1 with "〔…と言うのは〕". I can see that the 3-page とは entry in the DAJG is really about senses 2-5 here, and that our sense 1 is rather like と言うのは (2) "as for ...; when it comes to ...; regarding ...; how about ...", but I don't think it's a reason to break up the entry, just at the kokugos and JEs don't break up their entties. In fact I wouldn't be as certain as M&T seem to be that sense 1 is always an abbreviation of というのは. An xref between them wouldn't hurt. I'll close this to shorten the queue, and reopen with a suggested xref. |
|
17. | A* 2020-09-17 04:57:47 Jim Rose <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I am not quite able to follow the logic. In the expression というのは, wouldn’t 「と」have been a 格助詞, and 「は」have been a 係助詞? So wouldn’t the abbreviated form still be a 格助詞「と」and a 係助詞「は」as in the original expression?. Anyway, the senses after [1] all fit together semantically. [1] is semantically alien. |
|
16. | A* 2020-09-17 02:05:24 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
Comments: | > The issue is that sense [1] is the meaning of completely different homonym and an abbreviation of a special circumstance expression, and is not a compound particle at all Not according to the kokugos dictionaries. In daijr and daijs, sense 1 is under the same "格助詞「と」+係助詞「は」" heading as the other senses. > Do you have access to the reference I gave? I do. I'm just pointing out that other references don't support that assertion. The kokugos will almost always indicate if a term is an abbreviation but they do not in this case. |

|
7. | A* 2020-09-17 02:49:58 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
Comments: | If we do decide we want all of them, I guess I'd be OK with that too. It's not like they're useless. (and I'm still in favor of moving over more useful things from the name dictionary to jmdict, actually) Re: 大ブリテンおよび北アイルランド連合王国"?), enwiki instead has グレートブリテン王国 mofa uses グレートブリテン及び北アイルランド連合王国 https://www.mofa.go.jp/mofaj/area/uk/index.html Couldn't find anything on the British Embassy in Japan's website but ブリテン site:gov.uk turns up both グレートブリテンおよび北アイルランド連合王国 and グレートブリテン及び北アイルランド連合王国 ("oyobi" in hiragana/kanji) |

Comments: | I think we need a policy on these 公式名. At present it's hit-and-miss. GG5 and ルミナス have them embedded in the gloss, e.g. "〔公式名〕 ケニア共和国 the Republic of Kenya. ", "〔公式名〕 オーストラリア連邦 the Commonwealth of Australia", etc. Frankly, I think they're common enough and important enough to keep in JMdict proper. (BTW, how about イギリス: "〔公式名〕 大ブリテンおよび北アイルランド連合王国"?) |
