"var." can be used at the end when you want to specify that it's a variety but you don't know the variety name, similarly to how you can use "Felis sp." to specify that it is an unnamed or unspecified species of cat.

Dunno. I'm following the bit Rene wrote for the editorial policy: "For varieties, the abbreviation "var." must be used." I see that it's usually in the form "Brassica oleracea var. botrytis", and these dangling "var." are the minority. 
From what I'm reading about camelias these entries refer to different cultivars - there are really only two "vars". We'd better check with Rene - he's the expert in this field.

Normally in latin nomenclature you'd have the "var." bit followed by the name of the variety, e.g. something like "Camellia japonica 
var. kagurajishi", right? If we're using "var." to mean "variety of Camelia japonica", might it be better to phrase it like that?

Was checking ngrams on 椿 terms.

This is an eminently obscure variety of ツバキ. 
Search "ハナグルマツバキ" in quotes, and all you get is ~6 和英辞典 entries and that's it.
Search "hanakuruma camellia" and you get dictionaries.
Search "花車椿" in quotes and you'll get mostly dictionary references, plus a handful of legitimate entries.

I've included one such entry in the refs, which contains a laundry-list of random ツバキ flower varieties, almost all just as obscure as this one.

I think it's reasonable to have a threshold for inclusion of flower names, and any threshold one might pick, this flower would fall beneath it.  The alternative is to allow thousands of random flower names that don't do anyone any good. 

As a flower, this is also as close to A + B as one could get. This entry is literally "Flower Cart" + "Camellia japonica" = "Flower Cart Camellia japonica". This entry adds no information.

What's particularly amusing is that we don't even have an entry for the real word 花車[はなぐるま] "flower cart". 

In tandem with deleting this, adding a 花車 "flower cart" entry would probably be more useful for everyone.

Strong, strong recommendation to delete this one.

I agree. It was submitted by a translator who wanted the text-glosser to handle the XX工所 constructions better.  It's not a real suffix - often it's in XX加工所 constructions, which are really 加工 + 所. I've added both 工所 and 加工所 to the glossing-specials file.

I'm not convinced this is a word. I'm only seeing examples like 酒井鉄工所, which is broken down as 栗本 + 鉄工所.
