Comments: | A bit messy with indexing the sentences. There are about 150 indexed to 然う and another 750 indexed to そう, most of which are really (now) for 然う. The bulk index editor helps, and I've done about 600 of them, but there are still some in limbo. |

Comments: | I think we have to recognize the difference between what a term actually means, and what impression it gives in certain contexts and tones of voice. I remember my Japanese class teacher about 35 years ago demonstrating how ああそうですか with a falling tone just means "Oh I see", and with a rising tone can mean "really?, are you sure?". In English, a term like "lovely" in certain contexts and tones of voice can mean "revolting", "awful", etc. You really can't attempt to convey all of these in dictionary entries. I don't propose to change the entry at this stage, but I'll leave it open in case anyone wants to comment more. |

Comments: | PoS tags should be used to express the syntactic function of words. The syntactic function of 事前 is that it can be used adjectivally with the particle の and adverbially with the particle に. The first fact is expressed by the tag [adj-no]. The second fact cannot be expressed with our current PoS system. Usually such usage is implied by an [adj-na] tag, but this word is not [adj-na]. So we will have to add a note. As I have explained at some length before, the tag [n-t] should either be abolished or reserved for temporal nouns that can be used adverbially without attaching the particle に. The [adv] tag should only be used for adverbs. An adverb is a word that can be used adverbially (i.e. to modify a verb or adjective) as it is without attaching any particles. I cannot find any evidence that 事前 is an adverb. |

Comments: | All the sites I looked at for 写真結婚 and フォトウェディング discussed the photos in the context of 前撮り/後撮り/etc. In other words, there was a wedding but it was/would be at a different time from the photoshoot. It's not *just* a photo after which the couple go different ways. Re the mail-order, all the discussion I have seen on this practice involved an exchange of photos - a sort of remote omiai. "mail-order" implies a catalogue, and I have never seen reference to such things in the historical practice of overseas Japanese communities. I've suggested a trim of the first gloss. |

Comments: | That third sense from daijisen describes household furnishings and tools rather than wealth or prestige. It's not in other refs (including daijr or koj), and the source is 宇津保物語 from the 10th century. Related idiomatic expressions like "かまどを起こす" look very rare (no n-gram hits for any of its variant form or inflections), but they're recorded in modern references like sankoku. I wouldn't argue against their inclusion. To me, the "fortune / prestige" sense still seems like a reductive interpretation of the (rare) idioms. I think it relies on the context. |

Comments: | the third sense is definitely derived from the second, but i still think it's worth keeping as otherwise stuff like "かまどを起こす" would be hard to understand (maybe i should make an entry for that as well, "かまどを分ける" seems intuitive enough on other hand) |

12. | A* 2020-01-28 02:28:30 | |
Comments: | I might be wrong but is だ sometimes used to indicate a question? see phrases like だれだ? どこだ? I see the argument that these are just examples sense 1, "be, is" but I'm not really sure that's the case. Not for example how だ can not be followed by か (while verbs, na-adjectives, i-adjectives, nouns, can all come before a "か") e.g. X だれだか?X どこだか? on the other hand X お前だ? doesn't work as a question. so if it's a "question particle", it's only with interrogatives. Btw shouldn't senses 2 & 3 be a separate entry, maybe together with た? |

Comments: | Given that nikkoku is the only ref that has こしゅう as a reading for the body odour meaning, I think we can assume that it's rare (or archaic), and therefore it's probably not necessary to include a "body odour" sense on this entry. |

Comments: | It's a complex issue that goes to the heart of our merging policy & style. 狐臭/こしゅう is in the main body odour entry (1570890). (I wish it wasn't but Nikkoku has it.) Also, the main use of 狐臭 is to refer to body odour, although I'm sure Japanese people would usually read it わきが in that context. As you have shown, 狐臭/こしゅう also means a wine smell. That's fine and it warrants an entry, but I don't think it appropriate that someone who looks up 狐臭/こしゅう gets an entry *only* about the wine smell (yes, most apps/sites would serve up 1570890 as well, but 狐臭 and こしゅう are a bit buried there, as that entry is mainly about 腋臭/わきが.) I wouldn't really object to the body odour sense being dropped here, but I think there'd need to be at least a comment and perhaps an xref about it. Any thoughts from others? |

Comments: | But we already have an entry for the armpit smell sense. I don't think this is necessary. |
